I understand about the handicap placard on the sports car. Most people don`t pay attention. I`ve had all kinds of reactions from though. One guy even confronted me right after I got out of the BMW last year in Kansas. He basically said if I can drive, and get in and out of a sports car. I didn`t need a handicap permit. I just smiled at him and walked into the store. I`ve gotten looks, and people walk around the car to see if I had a permit. Funny thing is you instantly know as soon as you see me walk.

Nizmo- I`m late to this...glad your Mom is OK, sorry the insurance co.s are being such a PIA- I`m shocked that there`d be any *question* of oem parts for the injured party`s car! I generally have my Ins. [INSERT praise for Chubb] deal with theirs and that`s always worked fine. Hope the whole thing gets resolved satisfactorily.

Distracted by something, huh? I mean, why else does anybody run into anything under those circumstances? Well, plenty of folks don`t know how to use abs....

    Re: Accident Today...

So the other parties insurance policy seems to be cancelled or lapsed, so this is going to get interesting real fast. Hah to file with my insurance to get the ball rolling and a rental. Another hitch was the towing company that towed the car. They would not bring it to my bodyshop last night and the only way they were going to get it released was my insurance short of threatening. We gave the towing company permission to release it. Bodyshop is going to have their towing company send a truck. But wait, there`s more! Just got a call a minute or two ago asking for the release of the vehicle again. I think I`m going to have to repo my own car!

Nizmo- Gee, you`re really getting put through the wringer!

Does your mom have Uninsured Motorist Coverage? Ours took care of that no-problem, whatever costs/hassles there were didn`t end up being our problem.

I do, yes, it`s part of the full coverage. Still afraid my premiums will be going up.

It also appears the damaged spare tire-well is part of the uni-body, which could result in a total. If indeed it is, I`m not looking forward to the replacement process.

Confirmed the other party has no insurance, ugh. Apparently they only paid their 2 month deposit and kept their 6 month insurance card. Gonna go by the shop to look at the car a little more, but thinking on it now the trunk is aligned all weird, so I think there`s more damage than meets the eye. Were 50/50 on hoping it`s a total, on one side its been taken care of well by me and will still be a good car, and on the other side I hate car shopping. We`ve been sorta looking at options worse comes to worse.

Here`s the shop incase anybody wants to look. The virtual tour is awesome.

Really sorry you are going through this. I had a uninsured driver hit my father’s vehicle that I had parked outside of a my mother’s care facility. They took a corner too fast on a snowy road and hit my father’s brand new Edge and a nice year old Subaru behind his vehicle. No one was in these parked vehicles. It was only a $750 accident for us and $8000 worth of damage to the other parked car. Dad’s deductible was a $1000. He wasn’t well and I just took care of it without notifying his insurance. The driver was cited and admitted fault but had no insurance. I was very kind in how I dealt with the lady that caused the damage, it took the better part of 6 months, she made payments twice a month but she paid me in full.

Your’s looks to be expensive. I would expect most people would not be able to cover that kind of damage in a reasonable time frame but it might be worth it to talk to them up front. If not, go through your insurance and they’ll sue the other driver. Once again, I’m sorry you have to go through it.

    Nizmo:
Keep us informed on your experience and progress with the uninsured driver and car`s repair.
What is REALLY sad is that these drivers will still drive with a revoked license and no insurance out of economic necessity to keep working and pay for the life`s expenses, but do so at the peril of other drivers. Can`t say lock `em up because our penal/jail system is already full and reserved for "more serious" crimes (not my definition, but politicians) and most law officials will say its a "misappropriation" of taxpayer`s money.

Glad your Mom is OK. I must concur with others that she should be looked over by a doctor closely for ANY possible accident-induced physical maladies. While she may seem be OK now, physical problems and symptoms may show up much later. Neck and back/spine injuries are the most common from rear-enders.

Oh man, what a headache. Sorry to hear the other person doesn`t have insurance/ the headache this is turning into for you, man. Was the other driver from PA at least? If so you generally have some recourse from instate uninsured drivers vs out of state. Years ago a friend of mine`s brand new X3 was almost totalled by an uninsured out of state driver - now that was nightmare, the person basically got off scott free, and my friend`s insurance ended up picking up the whole repair bill.

You`re a good man, Gearhead. I`m glad the other person was honourable and repaid you in full.

    Re: Accident Today...

Other drive was from PA as well, but upon further investigation has little to no assets. I know I`m quick to jump to conclusions, but from their address they live in section 8, so I`m pretty sure I`ll never see a dime. Since this is going to be under our insurance, I`m returning our POS of a rental tomorrow as we have to pay a portion of it. Mother doesn`t have to drive much so I`ll leave her the GTI during the week, or she can drive the Jeep (although she hates that thing).

I did go by and get a better look at the car. The body shop is confident it`ll be fixed, but it will be up to State Farm to approve.

Worse comes to worse we did go car browsing, last night online and today in person. We narrowed it down to two cars incase we need to.

Gee, hope your premiums are nice and low if you have to put up with that!

That`s nice of you to let your mom drive the GTI if she needs to.
