Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
jrock645- That`s interesting to me how you get the bloat...doesn`t seem to bug you all that much but it sounds like something I wouldn`t like.
Glad you recognized the change in methodology factoring in with regard to the poundages. "Did I get the targeted muscles sore?" is pretty much my only concern and IMO even that is probably making a mountain out of a molehill.
IMO most people oughta max out their potential within a few years and more or less be in maintenance mode for most of their lives. Maintaining that DOMS effect at each workout is enough of a long-term challenge for me, figure it`s overkill but indicative of maintaining sufficient intensity.
I gather that some people get so discouraged by a perception of "no progress :( " that they actually quit exercising! Sounds utterly irrational to me, but I know at least two people like that IRL. So far they`ve always resumed exercising eventually, but they`re sure making it hard on themselves IMO.
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
Eh i dont like the bloat, but im an unfinished product at this point. I simply dont put on muscle without eating enough to risk some bloat and a tad bit of fat gain. Doesnt mean go hog wild and be reckless, but you have to take the good with the bad sometimes.
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
OK..you and I are at, uhm...different points on Life`s timeline :D
Heh heh, by the time you`re my age, just having muscle and being lean enough to see abs is an unusual accomplishment (at least it seems that way, judging by the people I know).
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
Week 2 on the Keto diet and it`s getting harder and harder to avoid carbs. I`ve lost weight but miss those donuts :(
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
RaysWay- Heh heh, eating a donut sounds so....foreign...to me that for a moment there I thought you must be joking! I *do* recall what some from Dunkin` taste like even after...gee, must be 40-some years and/but you have me wondering whether I`ve eaten once since then...keep thinking I must have but I can`t recall it.
Yeah, I`m weird about food all right :o Gather people think that "makes the whole leanness thing easy" for me..but gee, I do like a lot of the stuff I`d never eat regularly, just don`t see the point in eating it instead of something better.
I`ve dialed back my disdain for the Keto diet quite a bit...but I still question whether it`s the Right Answer for everybody who tries it.
What makes me wonder is that folks don`t seem to be truly *comfortable* with some of these approaches. If somebody doesn`t like their diet (and I don`t like using the word "diet" due to all the baggage that comes with it) then I wonder how long they`ll stick with it.
After ten/more years, you guys gonna still be OK with eating that way?
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
Im actually looking forwars to being on keto again. My body just works better in ketosis. Feeling better is sustainable imo
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
RaysWay- It occurred to me later that my wife can crave a certain type of carbs if she eats them for a while. If somebody is used to eating donuts/etc. then I bet going without much in the way of carbs period would indeed be a shock to the system.
Maybe you`ll acclimate to it the way jrock645 has, seems like plenty of people do.
I gather you`re losing the right kind of weight in the right places on the keto, got a specific goal in mind?

Ah, OK! That sounds good then after all...wasn`t sure which approach was/wasn`t something you could stick with.
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
Oh I don`t really care for donuts, I should`ve said nachos lol. But the first week of Keto was a struggle to keep the carb cravings at bay. I think I`m past the "craving stage" now and the diet is ok. Mixing up some of the meals has helped as I was getting tired of eggs, bacon and burgers. We tried a new stuffed pepper recipe (poblano peppers and chorizo) and fell in love with it. So every few days we`ve committed to trying new recipes which keeps things exciting in the kitchen.
My goal was really to break the plateau I was stuck at and it worked. I`m down 10 lbs so far. 225 is the short term goal, 200 is the long term goal. I want to get the body fat % down as much as possible until I work on gaining strength again.
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
Had the nerves burned off in my spine today. Sore. Gotta do the other side next Monday. Hope it doesn’t interrupt training too much.

Heh heh, OK..id wondered if the donuts were a specific craving. Now...?nachos?....
Sounds like you`re finding ways to kee the diet acceptable to you, bet that`ll be a big help.
Interesting that you`re not trying to gain strength while still heavy! I`d have thought it easier that way..
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
[DELETED post asking about the spinal work..]
Ack! OK, I no sooner posted that than I * did* remember! Gee, had totally slipped my mind, but undoubtedly not yours! What`s the prognosis?
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
Theyre twlling me 9 months relief. Possibly permanent barring reinjury. Should stop the chronic cycle of pain signal and inflammation. We’ll see. I was way grumpy all day after waking up from anesthesia.
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
jrock645- Sure hope it works well for you! And yeah, different people are different when it comes to anesthesia.
How you planning to avoid (re)aggravating it?
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
jrock645- So how did it go? How`s your recovery coming along?
OK, gonna bump this moribund thread even if I`m just posting for myself...
This time of year a lot of people pack on excess pounds. Some people seem to eat for the sake of eating, in quantities exceeding what they can use. IMO no good can come of that, and I just don`t get it.
Cautionary Tale, my BFF`s MiL: The lady is 96YO and has managed to avoid all of the various old-timer diseases; no cancer/heart trouble/diabetes/etc. and she`s still mentally sharp. Had a swell life in her own home. BUT...lack of exercise has trashed her life. Lousy balance/muscle control lead to an easily avoidable fall, osteoporosis made that result in broken bones, and after a successful recovery from repairing all that, she`s too weak to live independently. She can`t even raise her legs high enough to walk. Stuck in assisted living, where she basically does nothing all day. Had she only exercised her life would still be swell and they`d probably be doing a TV show about her.
Her son, who`s younger than my wife, refuses to exercise and is already having all sorts of issues of his own as a result. No more Detailing, and I wonder if he`ll be able to play golf (big deal to him).
Meanwhile, Accumulatorette (whose exercise regimen is hardly optimal, but it`s a lot better than nothing) continues to live the same life she did decades ago, just as I do.
[Heck], I`m expecting to be in the best shape of my life at 60, and it`s not like I`ve been *out* of shape since I was a kid (when I still listened to stupid/ignorant people).
You can`t avoid decline without exercise.
Re: 2018 Health and Fitness Thread
My back feels great after recovering from the procedure. No pain at all. And... I’m squatting again! Not heavy weight at all. Started with just the bar and have steadily added weight as long as I can do 25 reps or more. I’m up to 30 reps at 85lbs.
Trimming back down after bulking season. Was up to 230 as of 3 weeks ago. Back on keto, down to 215 but plenty more work to do.
Booked the wedding and honeymoon trip today. Getting married in Ibiza, Spain. I have 7 months get get beach ready. Back on full body routines twice a week. Always stayed leanest on full body programs. Two cardio/conditioning workouts per week. USMC calisthenics, elliptical and HIIT on the bike OR sprint sets in the pool with fins and paddles. I’ve nicknamed the calisthenics program “12 minutes of agony.” We’re gonna get this waistline ripped down to a decimal point, by god.
