Exclamation First gen Xterra lost it`s shoe.

Was out for a test drive yesterday at the local Honda dealer. Proceeded in the HR-V down a well know route. Noticed a first gen xterra in traffic way in front of us. Better half yells TIRE!! We see this complete tire and wheel bouncing along in front of us and traffic!! WTH? After avoiding hitting it and watching traffic avoid it, we continued on. Turned around and saw the xterra sitting on the side of the road. Out of harms way. Sitting on the front rotor!! Lost the whole front wheel and tire! That tire must have went a good mile before stopping. From what I could tell everyone was ok. WOW. Must have been loose lug nuts...

PA DETAILER- Gee, that`s really something! Imagine, somebody driving around without noticing what was going on until it got to that point.

Good on you for avoiding it.

People get seriously hurt or killed all the time from things like that, it happened here not long ago:

Driver Killed by Tire Coming Off Another Car on Opposite Side of 14 Freeway in Newhall | KTLA

I`m glad everyone was OK in this case.

In my younger days, I was driving cars for an auto auction seller. We would pick up cars from the auction or dealers, fix them, then resell at auction or dealer. These were usually the not so great trade ins.

We were driving back from a dealer and the other driver`s car had the rear tire fly off. I was behind the car. The speed was fairly slow and rolled quite a distance before stopping. It did not hit anyone.

I gotta tell you; this almost happened to me. Yes, I`m going to admit I did some brake work on my old Pathfinder and forgot to tighten a front wheel...

So, lemme tell you. It takes a moron not to know something is wrong with the vehicle if the lug nuts are left loose... I mean, the whole steering wheel shakes violently. And, my lugs nuts were no where near coming off..

    Just sayin`

    That.

I once had a tech leave the lugs slightly loose on a rear wheel and, even as an ignorant young kid, I knew it right away. But then people drive around with nearly (or even thoroughly) flat tires and never notice that either.

[INSERT usual elitist rant about how not just anybody oughta be allowed to drive a vehicle on public streets]
