    Re: Random thoughts thread

How is it with the new matte paints. Is it clearcoat on them that a basic b/c or is the clearcoat it self a matte or is it a whole different finish on them?

If their is some kind of clearcoat it would work with a ordinary compound and/or polish. Since you don`t ad any to it put just remove the defects and gets a smooth finish from it. If the top layer has some texture on it to get the matte look then it`s a whole different story. Have don`t heard and real answers to it. There is some that says to polish it as you would with a b/c. Cause the matte finish is under the clearcoat.

Anyone have an experience with a matte paint and polishing it?

I can`t answer the questions with any certainty, but I`ll provide some observations.

A couple of years ago at our local auto show Hyndai had a Veloster on display with their factor gray matte paint. As a detailing ethusiast I found the idea rather interesting and spent some time touching and looking at the finish of the vehicle. On that car the paint was not smooth like a typical clear coated car. It did feel a little rough, but not enough you to where could feel indvidual grains. The closest comparison I can think of is a sheet of paper. Odly enough, my bicycle with a satin/matte paint job is almost identical in feel to the car. I have a few small scuffs on the bike and they don`t look you`d think they would if there is a clear layer. They are in the paint despite being pretty superficial. My un-educated guess is it`s a unique paint process.

On a side note, I don`t know about the frozen paints used by BMW, but the paint used on that Veloster made EVERY fingerprint look like a dark spot. I could not imaging trying to maintain that finish.

I first saw matte paint on a Mercedes maybe 8 years ago and thought it looked cool. But from what I understand there is no clearcoat over it. I hear that scratch repair and maintenance is a nightmare. I would never own a car with matte paint, but I might consider a wrap.

The matte finish is on the clearcoat. Base coat paint always looks matte until you put clear on top. To polish it would make it shinier as you are smoothing out the finish.

And unless the basecoat is something special it wouldn`t be UV-resistant by itself.

I always figured it was just a matter of having a flattener mixed into the clear like we did back in the day, although I suppose it`d be a bit more involved than that when it gets down to the exact how-they-do-it.

Do you mean that it`s painted with something on the clearcoat?

Not to speak for DBAILEY, but I think he meant "in" the clearcoat rather than some additional layer. There`d be no sense to that when they could just shoot a non-glossy clear instead of the regular/glossy stuff. Same process, same number of coats of paint, just a different Clear for the final layer.

Yeah I think so to. But if it`s a clearcoat that is not clear LOL. You could polish it the same way as a clearcoat. The only thing is if the matte clearcoat has a texture in it. Then a polish could smooth it and get glossy instead. And it`s very strange it`s not so much talk about the matte paints and the maintance and the way you polish them. Here in Sweden we see more and more of cars with oem matte paint on them. Maybe it`s a big secret on how you handle them since many detailers wouldn`t touch them.

Now I`m thinking "suede" vs. "matte" vs. "semi-gloss" etc. etc. and realizing that I simply don`t know what I`m talking about This might be one of those topics where the seemingly obvious explanation is completely wrong.

I`ve used uhm...let`s say "not glossy" clearcoats...that were absolutely smooth, slick, and level just like the glossy ones. No discernible texture like a "suede-style" paint where you can have a certain type of (deliberate) orangepeel, they just didn`t shine (I`ve never tried abrading one to see if that`d make it shiny). But I have zero idea whether that`s what the OEMs are using or not.

    Hello, Tony !
Hope all is well with you and your family !

Here is a great Youtube video to watch regarding your questions -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZUzvhhyGR8

And here is another Youtube video talking about DrBeasley Matte Finish products and maintenance -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLmp_5ULA14

Bottom line, you cannot ever - polish - it or it will remove the matte finish - flattening it - and it will be shiny in that spot..

    Re: Random thoughts thread

A guy looked at my Corvette the other day and said I wonder how many people could have been fed for the money that sports car cost.
I replied I am not sure, it fed a lot of families in Bowling Green, Kentucky who built it, it fed the people who make the tires, it fed the people who made the components that went into it, it fed the people in the copper mine who mined the copper for the wires, it fed people in Decatur IL. at Caterpillar who make the trucks that haul the copper ore. It fed the trucking people who hauled it from the plant to the dealer and fed the people working at the dealership and their families. BUT,... I have to admit, I guess I really don`t know how many people it fed.
That is the difference between capitalism and welfare mentality. When you buy something, you put money in people`s pockets, and give them dignity for their skills.
When you give someone something for nothing, you rob them of their dignity and self worth.
Capitalism is freely giving your money in exchange for something of value.
Socialism is taking your money against your will and shoving something down your throat that you never asked for.
