    Painting Wood Furniture

I have two old dressers my fiance wants painted when we redo our room. We are painting the walls a light gray color and she wants the dressers black or white. She is leaning more towards black but wont know until the room is painted. Basically, does anyone have experience painting wood furniture. I have a HVLP sprayer and have painted several things before but all have been metal. Never experienced painting wood before other than using normal spray paint in a rattle can. I plan on sanding it down and then painting. The question is what time type of paint to use? Oil based? Latex? Water based? Laquer? Lead based (just kidding)....

I can help you with that project. I own a HVLP sprayer and have done thousands of feet of cabinets, baseboard, shoe molding, casing, you name it.

To repaint wood furniture, it will need to be clean and dull. Wash it with Dirtex and wipe dry. Sand with 180 grit sanding block until smooth. If you have any defects, patch before sanding using MH Ready Patch.

Prime the surface with the sprayer using Benjamin Moore Fresh Start (waterborne) or Zinsser 123. The paint I use for finish coat is Sherwin Williams Pro Classic (waterborne) or Benjamin Moore Aura (waterborne). Do not thin the paint.
Two light coats about 4 hours apart always produces great results for me.
After the paint has cured 24 to 36 hours, apply two light coats of waterborne polyurethane in choice of sheen. Satin works best for furniture unless you want a piano finish. That will require a Gloss sheen.
