OK, I got to thinking about how things are "diiferent" now for kids. I was born in 59 (that`s 1959 smarty) and growing up then we didn`t:

    have a cell phone

play on a iPad, listen to a iPod

    chat on line

    have a facebook profile

think cable TV was standard, along with a remote control!

    wear seat belts

    wear bike helmets

    We did:

    Play outside a lot

Work. whether on a farm or cutting grass in the neighborhood

    Think 8 tracks were cool

already have an old muscle car picked out as your first ride

(damn they were cheap back then!)

OK - what do YOU remember?
All I have in this world is my word, and my balls and I don`t break `em for no one, you understand?"

    As kids we:

Played outside most of the day

    Didnt mind getting dirty

Rode our dirt bikes without helmets

    Walked to school

Went to school with a lunch (in a box or a paper bag)

Did our homework with paper and pencils without our parents helping or doing the work for us!

When we needed money we would find work like cutting lawns, cleaning garages/basements, paper route

    We fought our own fights.

and I knew better then to say NO to my parents

    Kids sure are different today

Biggest change in what`s "different" with people in general?

I can still remember when people weren`t so blatantly disrespectful of one another`s time. Not saying everyone is bad about that these days but a lot of people are.

Thus the reason I shut down people with "The quickness" Charlie, it is a "Pandemic" situation as of now where courtesy and good manners go out the window so I find myself "Gently reminding"(Or not so gently...) that they need to "Straighten up and fly right" so to speak.

Of course what do I know as I am a old "Wax jockey" aka "Car washer".

Technology changed a bunch of stuff for sure, but the one thing that stands out to me is how little ambition kids have these days. We used to go door to door looking for work, lawns, leaves, snow, washing cars, etc. These days kids have their parents bring the fund-raisers to work and have them sell the stuff.

Heh heh...oh sheesh, just get me going on people today.... Lack of civility, lack of politeness, lack of wit, lack of deep thinking. People are so [darn] rude, crude, and shallow these days. Everybody`s so "special" yet "elite" is now a perjorative.

And heh heh, whenever I see the TV ad for that cholesterol med where the guy says something like "I used to ride a bicycle without a helmet; I sure took some crazy risks back then!" I just wanna whup that [twit] upside his head. Life can kill you, so don`t [screw] up. Hey, used to be, stupid careless people got eaten by bears, and maybe that wasn`t all bad.

The technological advances of the last half-century *are* really something, but maybe not as huge a diff as what my parents experienced...I mean, we take stuff like electricity almost for granted, everybody has indoor plumbing, etc.

I suppose I`m OK with all the new technology, even if I do ignore most of it. Not too thrilled with the privacy implications of stuff like GoogleEarth and StreetView though

But I can`t help but wonder if the techno stuff is contributing to a trend towards shallow thinking. Sorta the intellectual fallout of this short attention span/immediate gratification thing. The young people I know don`t sit and ponder things for hours the way we did back in the day and seem to get frustrated if they can`t figure something out right away; latching onto some quick/simple answer that`s often wrong.

Everybody`s an expert in five minutes, in part thanks to the internet. There`s no longer much respect for, or interest in, the Wisdom of the Ages... that`s so yesterday.

According to some, it`s not even "so yesterday"

Things have changed but the thing is, they always do….better or worse? Who’s to say?

    C. Charles Hahn- Heh heh, luckily for me, the techno-snoops can`t really see my property, what with the trees and all. No StreetView in my area either. But yeah, when "in public" I always assume I`m being taped, lots of security cams everywhere.

    jadecraft- Welcome to Autopia!

Heh heh, I don`t mind being the one to say

My all time favorite to describe the folks out there today and what they just don`t get, comes from John Wayne.

For the *LONGEST* time they didn`t update the view of my property; and it just so happened that you actually *could* see one of my Caprices parked in the driveway. It was kinda funny how long they kept that on file, I`d gotten rid of the Caprices years ago, and that pic still showed it sitting there.

Heh heh, none of the real vehicles ever sits out like that :grinno: So there`s nothing to see anyhow.
