I got a laptop from a friend, a Compaq, not sure of the model though. Anyways, it has Safari, MSN, Internet Explorer, and Google Chrome, but none of the browsers work. My other laptop has never had a problem like this before, and didnt know internet was something you had to pay for, if that is the case. If anybody can help me connect to the intenet that would be great. The new (friends laptop) is using my previous wireless router`s wireless access, and the signal is excellent, but anytime I try to connect it says I a not connected to the internet.

It sounds like your router`s security is blocking the laptop from connecting. Do you have any security setup on your router, like a password?

what operating system is it running?

if you can detect and join the wireless network, it should get the IP itself and just work. Have you restarted the computer?

Is the router setup as DHCP or static IP? You should also check the computer to make sure there isn`t a firewall blocking your access. You can also try a Linux live CD and see if that can connect.

    DHCP must be on.

Make sure MAC filtering is off or get the new computer`s MAC ID entered into the router so it permits internet access
