You think that Chemical Guys is hurting the Meg`s Pro line? I think you`re forgetting who CG`s parent is...it`s Warner Chemical that`s in there (if at all) battling with Meg`s and 3M (and AutoMagic, etc.) for the dealer/bodyshop market. CG`s is just some Warner VP`s internet marketing wet dream, and I`d bet dollars to donuts that their revenue is a tiny drop in the bucket compared to Warner, 3M, or Meg`s, even ignoring the retail/consumer sales of those "big three".

When I refer to Chemical Guys I`m referring to the whole organization including Warner and the relabelers(since it`s all the same stuff anyway). On the car sites I visit I rarely see anyone post about Megs pro Line(except MOL). Here at Autopia Megs Pro Line seems to be discussed less than CG`s stuff. As for paint stores it`s mostly Megs, 3m and Presta in my local market. Personally, I`d take most anything in the Megs Pro Line over CG`s any day of the week. I think Megs is making far more off their consumer products than the pro line.

You were just such a target with the MOTOR CITY name and the Detroit location. You should live and breathe "I made it myself". Your post was to the contrary, and it shocked me. I have a degree from Cornell in Labor Relations. I have owned a GM dealership which ran a union repair shop. The core manufacturing and distribution beliefs that built America are still needed to fuel tomorrow, for you, for me, for our kids. If we all give in to the "who cares, as long as it works" theory, we are cheating ourselves out of a future.

What if? The first time I changed the oil in my mother`s `88 Olds I was shocked to see the starter had a "made in Japan" label on it. The first time I rotated the tires, I was further shocked to see that the aluminum wheels had "made in Japan" cast into the back.



In 2005, she got a new Buick. She got the Chrome Tech wheel option, which I researched online, and saw the pictures of the limited capacity special chrome line, where they received the painted wheels from the mfr. and how they hand polish them through the various plating steps, etc. I always thought the wheels looked a little funny...there was some sort of lip on the front...that just didn`t seem consistent with simply stripping and chroming an aluminum wheel.



So anyway...the first time I rotate the tires...imagine my shock/horror/chagrin...the wheels have cast in the back "made in China" and the chrome part (I can see from the back) is some sort of plastic veneer that is crimped around the spokes of the aluminum wheel! All for only $500 extra! Nothing more apple pie than a Buick made in Canada from a bunch of Chinese parts. Hey, but I`m not bitter.

Well, if Warner is hurting Meg`s, they`ve been doing it for a long time, because they have been around a long time. CG`s seems to be a fairly recent innovation, and as has been discussed in other threads, seems to be an internet marketing concept with a "hip" name, etc. I look at it as just a marketing tool for Warner, to tap the internet market for whatever it`s worth. I don`t think it`s even clear that it is really CG`s that does the relabeling for the boutiques we have been alluding to, rather than Warner corporate. I think it`s more likely that Warner does the "private labeling" for the CG products and any private label business they pull in.

I think we`ll just have to agree to disagree. Meg`s sells stuff "on the internet" (on meguiars.com) as a courtesy and to develop brand loyalty. It`s not a significant sales channel for them, and IMO they don`t care if it becomes one or not. Their sales of Mirror Glaze product on the internet are miniscule, it`s simply not how they market or sell the product. The amount of MG product that they sell just with the limited selection they have at Pep Boys I`m sure dwarfs what they sell at meguiars.com, and that`s without even talking about the PBE stores. Megs has and has had forever a well developed wholesale and PBE sales network, including local tech reps etc. to market the MG line (and now the Detailer line) to high volume customers like dealers, body shops, car washes, etc. I think they could care less if their internet sales of those products dropped to zero, it wouldn`t effect their marketing or strategy one iota, they`re not making any real money selling quarts to you or me.

Setec, you might be right in that Megs doesn`t care about small internet sales to enthusiasts. In the scheme of things it might only be a couple percent of their business.
