I have asked this same question many times and I don`t think it has every been answered as well as Todd answered it above.

Todd, that answer made me feel MUCH better about polishing my own cars.

Any thoughts about "repainted" areas. As some might recall, some clown smashed the cr*p out of the side of my car and I basically had the entire driver side repainted. I don`t have a paint thickness gauge, but I was planning on doing a full wash/clay/polish/seal in the next few weeks (car was repainted in November).

Are there any general rules with respect to repainted areas after an accident? Are they thicker/thinner or is case specific? I guess unless I get a thickness gauge I`ll never know for certain.

I think I read a post on Autopia just the other day where someone polished up a GTO that had a repainted hood and fender (maybe), and the repaint was much thicker than the factory paint when checked on the PTG.
