Newb question - Halogen light stand

I have a couple of sets from Home Depot, they are red in color, the 2 halogen lights are each 2-stage switched - 250 - 500w = 1000 watts total
The base separates from the 2 lights, they tilt down to a certain degree and up, and the cord is 12` long. Husky Model 273-771.

If I were ever to do it again, I would look into metal halide lights; anything that runs cooler with better lighting has to be a plus..

My local Ace/Handyman Hardware carries Regent brand, I`ve got the twin 500s, that were $39.95 at the time. I see they went up ten bucks. Gonna pick up a single floor model too since they`re cheap. Regents come with a spare 500w bulb inside the handle.
