Dynos appear to be very dangerous devices. I like the follow up video of the hole in the block. I think there is a reason why engine builders use engine stand dynos.

They are dengerous when the operator doesn’t know how to use it.

Good vids! Cool to watch, but I know it must suck to have that happen! I`ve had a few engines grenade on me before, just not on the dyno!

wow I`m not a speed guy, but what`s the point of pushing your car that hard? I mean is it just to get a print out of it`s performance kinda of like a drag race on paper or do they use them to adjust and tune to make the car faster? I can`t imagine seeing one of those diesel trucks on the fwy going that fast...

Dyno is a nice tool during tuning to measure results of tweaks/changes to the base tune/map.

Lotsa folks like to get the nice printout of peak hp/to curves just to compare to others (bragging rights/bench racing) but that`s pretty pointless given the disparity between dyno types (DynoJet, Mustang, others), climate conditions, SAE correction factors and such that can skew results.

When we had our car tuned it was a somewhat harrowing afternoon as they likely did 10+ WOT pulls to get timing, fueling and other parameters to a reasonably safe, yet improved, state of tune. While the resulting graph was fun to look at, the real results were shown at the end of the 1/4 mile.

And they always make you sign a release before strapping car down as, well, stuff happens.

It always blows me how casual some people are around cars on the dyno. Even if it’s not a catastrophic failure, if you get hit by a wheel weight coming off, you’re in for some pain!

I just skimmed through the video - does this video have the one where some turbo car on the dyno is moving enough air it pulls a shop rag off the workbench nearby and ingests it?

Ahh well that makes more since if your tunning, but seems like most guys are bench racing...

Pretty much. Shops make decent money having `Dyno Days` where they`ll host a club, $75 or so (used to be anyway) for 3 pulls with air/fuel readings.

Even if they start at 8am, I`ve seen/heard about them running until 1-2am if attendance is good.

Was always fun to see the variety of cars sometimes from imports on Nitrous to twin turbo Corvettes. Even 10 years ago some of the imports were quite impressive, 400+ hp to the wheels; noise those things made though was horrible though. Ear-bleeding horrible.

It could even be like actual racing in the sense that you breathed a huge sigh of relief if you were able to drive home afterward with no, uh...issues or noises from underhood. I guess it`s really no different than drag racing, engine-stress wise but it just *seems* more fraught with peril.

    Re: Epic dyno fails

Easiest way to tune without having to do dumb things on public streets. Again for those who love the hp scene this is fun. I myself won`t take my diesel on there but will use the 1/4 mile time and weight and use the calculators online that prove to be much more accurate for the actual amount of power being made. Dyno hp and track hp very rarely match.
