Smile Your first car vs your kids first car

to start, my daughters just turned 16 and now one has just gotten her license ... living here in Florida is quite different than back in NY. So instead of letting her drive one of our Xb`s, I picked up a 2004 Mercedes SLK320 Special Edition with 77k. Got a decent deal and the general repairs needs were quite a shock(brakes, oil change front suspension parts), but still leaves the vehicle at a lower cost than either of my Xb`s.

This got me thinking about what my father thought was a good first car and what today`s kids think ... My father brought home a 1978 (yes some of you weren`t alive then..lol )
4 door Nova in beige ( sorry never took pictures of it) , if disappoint could be felt world wide, then it would have been a 8.0 earthquake ... it sort of looked like this, but in plain beige >>>>

As a car guy I really couldn`t do the same to my kids and the factor does mean a lot for them ...

Sorry no top down pictures today was 64 this morning ...

I was told by my friends and neighbors, after telling them my story and they said I was cool dad

The detailing of it is the next project .... probably with unreleased and beta products in another thread ...

    Anyhow

What was your first car and what did you get your kid(s) for their first car?

Wow! Super nice for a first car!! Your daughter must be ecstatic Cool dad points for sure.

Gotta say after my teenage niece totaled her first car 10 days after buying it in January - I`ll be getting my son a reliable beater when the time comes

thanks .. I was given the evil eye by my wife for a two seat sports car, but this way she can only drive her sister to and from school .. no passengers behind to distract, it takes two hands to drive it, so no texting, and it is built like a tank with lots of airbags and roll bars behind the seats ... She really wanted a Bronco II .. go figure ..

    Steve,

    Nice Job.

My first car was pushed almost as many miles as I drove it. Sorry I don`t have picks, I think I must have subliminally discarded them. It was a `78 station-wagon and the only kool feature was someone ripped off the rear wiper before I acquired it and when you went to wash the rear window you could soak the car behind you.(or Person

Both my kids benefited from my real or perceived frustration of driving hoopdie while everyone else had styled rides. What I can tell you is that the girls I got liked me for me not for my car!

My first car was the one I paid for, though the old man did co-sign the loan. 1986 Honda Prelude, $2800.

If and when I have kids it will be the same.

It was grey when I bought it with light front end damage. Fixed it up and repainted it teal green with my father.

my friends just made fun of it, but it was better than walking and gave us a place to park and party

Well i guess i left a little out .. I was not given my car it was brought home and I was told to pay for it $3500 ... the transmission was shot, which is why my father got a deal on a nearly new car, and it came with a misfit V8 engine that should have been in a Monza, which on a good day got 8mpg ... someone probably would have paid to have it gone

Re: Your first car vs your kids first car

My first car was a 1987 Oldsmobile Delta 88. It was the proclaimed granny mobile, but I actually wanted the thing. It was my mothers boss`s mothers car. It was neglected, rusty, but ran great. Me and my dad fixed all the rust and repainted it. I was proud of the thing; all of the other kids at school were getting SRT4 Neons and BMW`s. I was still proud of that car. I still remember scavenging the salvage yard for that chrome luggage rack

While I unfortunately can`t have children, my niece is going to be driving a couple years. Been tossing around the idea of giving her the Jetta, the only problem is it is stick. My sister never managed to learn that skill, maybe it jumped a generation and she`ll master it, lol.

Re: Your first car vs your kids first car

In 1972 I bought a used `68 camero. It was already a beater, but it was mine. I worked every Saturday and Sunday at a car wash to make the payments to my uncle who paid for it up front.

I always said my kids have to do it the same way. Work and pay for it themselves, but; my son is 20 and a scholarship athlete at a Div 1 school. They won`t allow them to work during the school year and he gets shipped out in the summer to play collegiate summer ball too. I got him a 3 year old Xb.

My first car was a `68 Dodge Charger. Worked two jobs to pay back my friend who loaned me half of the purchase price of 600.00.

Poorboy, I`m glad she was in the Benz. She had a big initial impact from behind and then got pushed into the car ahead....all on a bright, sunny June afternoon.
