It hadn`t been done in eons, so I tried to get as much crap off it as I could before running a mitt....

Re: What did you do detailing wise today?

burned a customers paint today. cool huh? not something you see everyday lol

was chasing this scratch to perfection. it was a longer scratch, about 2 inches long to the right. the customer bought it used about 2 months ago, i noticed it had a bit of touch up paint on it but didn`t think anything of it.

followed my typical quick compound over it and it started to clear up the scratch a bit. so i wanted it to be perfect and gone, measured directly on the scratch and i got 5.3 mils. i thought, good i got some clear to work with. switched pads and worked it a little more, as soon as i lifted and looked at the pad, i knew i was screwed.

measured directly on the burned area and it was 4 mils. measured back on the scratch and it was 5.1 mils. i should have measured the area where my pad area would be. lesson learned. we will bring it to the bodyshop tomorrow and see what the damage will cost

looking back at the area burned, it is where the panel starts to curve out. i`m guessing someone has tried to polish the scratch out before and took off quite a bit of clear before i got to it.

oh well. live and learn..... the hard way

Well, so much for going `minimalist`!

Wash just gonna wash the car (Kami Miyabi x 2, ISM x 1, Infinity Wax, Overcoat) with Gyeon Bathe...ended up washing with Gyeon Bathe+, then Gyeon Wetcoat, then Kami Overcoat as drying aid.

    So ashamed...

Sorry, donbeezy. That really sucks. Thanks for posting this, as it`s a good reminder that even skilled detailers experience complications from time to time.

This blue is quite nice; it`s making me think black cars may soon be in my past.

Sorry, to hear it...and yes, even though I was flamed once for saying it...You can burn through paint with a PC.
When you polish paint...it`s not if, but when...even with the best tools...one day you will burn through paint.
I learned (after that)...I no longer chase dragons (RIDS). If they ask...make sure to tell them it`s at their risk.

I was just asked if I could buff out some light scratches...When I looked...someone had keyed the car real BAD.
We are talking about four or five times, one right above the other. I said "It`s not something I can buff out".
I give `em the primer, basecoat, clearcoat...In many cases all three are thinner than a Post-It note...speech.

Please let us know how it turns out.

OUCH! Yepper...I have been using Mike Phillips inspection form and document the best I can find.
If I find something later that we didn`t go over. I call, send pictures...and a "Did you know?" text.
...and yes...I don`t proceeded on the problem area until I hear back from Mr. Customer.

Ball is then in their court...
It is always a fear when polishing that you`ll burn, and it will be from now on with a $950 price tag.
