    CEL code po128

I got a CEL light po128 on 2013 Ford Edge. I’m going to change thermostat. The code mean the coolant is under temp I believe. I think my thermostat is stuck open. I am by no means a mechanic and any advice would be greatly appreciate.

Quick google of the code sounds like the verbiage for the fault lines up with what you’re thinking.

Basically, the car knows it should take X amount of time to reach XX degrees; if it doesn’t get there in time the fault stores.

If your code reader can look at data, watch your coolant temp from a cold start and head to the highway with your heat off. Let your temp settle in. Now, turn your heater on full hot and full fan speed. If you can, shift down a gear or two. If your coolant temp now drops, It’s extremely likely your thermostat is stuck open.

When I’m at work tomorrow I’ll make sure there’s not any TSB’s or anything related to that fault that could be caused by something else.

I don`t see anything regarding any TSB`s or similar for that fault, so I`m guessing it`s just a thermostat.

For what it`s worth, I always recommend going genuine *insert vehicle manufacturer here* for thermostats (and water pumps), I`ve seen/read about too many bad parts store ones.

This is a great example of why I hate it when some cars don`t have even the basics like a water temp display on the dash.

I`ve had the thermostat go out out on a couple cars. In both instances I had a water temp gauge and noticed the engine never getting up to operating temp before a light was ever triggered. When I owned a car that DIDN`T have that it drove me nuts. Even if they aren`t too accurate they can at least be a sign something isn`t working like it should.
