    Lubricant, What do you recommend.

What type of lubricant do you use for things like car door hinges and gas filler door hinge ? Thank you for any help/suggestions.

I`ve tried the various "dry" lubricants and still find this product to work very well:

I`ve tried a few different types myself - I find "Slick Stuff" works the best (and readily available at Lowes):

One problem with aerosols is that they`re difficult to control when you just need a very small amount, precisely placed. Drips or runs get annoying after you just finished cleaning the jambs. I keep a small bottle of 90W gear oil on my cart with a needlepoint applicator. It penetrates into the pivot areas, hangs around for a long time and doesn`t drip or run if sparingly applied.

I use different stuff (on the extremely rare occasions I lube *any* hinges..like, not yet this century..) but when I do, I too use a needlepoint applicator.

The same ~1,5oz. bottle of Snake Oil that I use on [certain tools] is usually my choice; I`ve had that little thing since the early `90s and there`s still plenty left.

Come to think of it, I`ve *never* lubed the hinges/etc. on a fuel filler. Funny that I don`t have to lube stuff, what with Ohio winters and all...

A white lithium grease spray is what Bob, the Oil Guy suggest.

I use Tri-Flow Lubricant Spray, but that is me and I apply it to door, hood, trunk , and gas fill door hinges AND the door lock (yes, vehicles still come with them, even if it is only one!) in late fall as a winter prep.

Hood release cables and latches are overlooked ,as are gas filler door release cables and latches. I hate on a sub-zero winter day when a gas filler door will not open because it is frozen shut or the latch will not release. Sometimes a pounding of the fist on the door is needed to "nudge" it open.

Lonnie- Huh, interesting that you experience those problems if you don`t do the lubing. That`s another head-scratcher for me as I just never have those issues despite not ever doing anything to prevent them.

You`re certainly welcome, though I question just how helpful I really was...this is just something I haven`t had to deal with much, and/but I *do* deal with keeping my hinges well-Detailed and I`d hate to mess that up by lubing them the wrong way.

This might not be the prettiest solution, but I`m a fan of using Fluid Film in these cases. Yes, it`s a little (erm, alot) messier and uglier looking, but it holds up and sticks on there even under harsh elements. People with OCD probably shouldn`t use it as it does look a little ugly, but I`m more of a function over form guy in this case.

Re: Lubricant, What do you recommend.

Nizmo- Since this is Autopia, I`ll point out that ya don`t have to suffer from OCD to want your hinges/etc. nice and clean

No, no..I`m not flaming you for using an approach that does exactly what you want in a manner that`s OK with you, really just teasin`...we do what we need to do Note that I still have the *factory* grease on the hinges of the `93 Audi...goopy tan stuff that I could clean up better but don`t. Eh, it`s still clean, so it looks OK and I avoid it when I Detail, so I`m doing the functional approach too.
