Finally retired the old Cadillac. Hello VW

We`ll the wife was sick and tired with her 04 Cadillac SRX. She really wanted to down size but didn`t want to lose space. She liked the fact the VW had three rows. So she was leaning that way to begin with.

I convinced her to at least test drive other vehicles. Which she did. Tucson "I don`t like the seats" Compass "to small" Sportage " I dont like the back" She wouldn`t even try a subaru or ford " those are ugly".

Found 2018 Tiguan SE AWD and she fell in love with it. I convinced her we don`t need the third row and that the AWD drive is safer. So here it is.

2018 VW Tiguan SE AWD 21000 miles.

Paint is actually in really good shape. Some minor blemishes 2 small rock chips on the hood and a little dink on the back bumper cover.

Any advice on VW paint? I have hardly any experience with them? I haven`t owned a VW since high school. A 1980 Scirocco S. Loved the car hated the money going into it. So the remaining bumper to bumper warranty of 4years and 51k miles helped me.

Hoping it will be joyous. Luckily my wife`s commute is only 11miles round trip.

Thank you. She can be difficult to car shop with. Nissan`s were out because she didn`t like the head rest. Mazda"s seats looked "weird." Honestly I told her to take her time, and to find something that fits her. She is only 4`11 and it is hard for her to see out of most vehicles.

Tc99m- As I have a weirdly tough time getting comfortable in so many vehicles, I appreciate her challenge there...at 4` 11" a lot of vehicles just aren`t made to fit her. And IMO, if you aren`t comfortable, you`re probably not gonna drive as well as you could/should/would.

And hey, !lucky you! that she didn`t want a Nissan, what with their soft paint. The VW oughta be pretty good Detailing-wise.

First of all, congrats on the new to you vehicle!

If the paint is anything like my GTI, it`s going to be an interesting ownership. Paint is harder to correct, but will mar and swirl if you even look at it funny. It`s also insanely thin and chips easy. I got the GTI all polished to perfection once and even with careful washing and drying methods, it went back to where I started with. Poorboy`s Black Hole Glaze has been my favorite since.

And if you plan on keeping it long term do NOT do 10K mile oil changes that VW reccomends. Stick to 5K mile oil changes. If you buy an oil extractor it`s super easy to change the oil as the oil filter is on top. You can pick up a Mityvac for $100. Also don`t be afraid to run the snot out of it to get the oil nice and hot to try and prevent carbon buildup.

TC, congratulations on the new vehicle. That product is immensely popular in my area.

We`ve had a bunch of VWs over the years but ultimately abandoned them for Audi awhile back - - the local dealers and their general (in)ability to solve problems with their own product scared us away. I`ve seen far too many times where the dealership makes owning a VW a make or break proposition. We got a two yr. old GTI a few months back - - a great drive so far.

    Good choice!
A car club buddy came to our Christmas lunch with one. Said he and his wife drove and kicked the tires of all the compatibles and picked the same car as you.

Congrats on the new ride! Like others have pointed out, the paint is on the hard side. If you have some microfiber cutting pads they will make your life easier. I noticed the chipping that Nismo pointed out, not that there is much you can do about it. I wonder if harder paints cause more chipping? I haven’t had a chipping problem on my BMWs though.
