Of course. I agree. But someone can take 40 hours to clean a car if they want to. Keep that in mind. As for how much time will be needed? Its a new car. I`ve driven it for 4 weeks. So that should give you a decent idea of how much cleaning is needed prior to the detailing. I dont want to be quoted 20 hours when it may really only need 7 hours of work. That`s why I am asking if 20 hours and $1700 is reasonable for a brand new car needing opti coat.

Unfortunately you didn`t answer the question you quoted. Is $1,700 a fair price for what is involved?

Please note... this is a BRAND NEW CAR. It rolled off the lot 1 month ago. It has a brand new paint job that was completed 2 months ago. This isnt a 1980 BMW that needs extensive work. Its brand new. Not a single scuff or chip on it, anywhere. The wheels are also 1 month old. Brand new. I just wanted to get my rims and paint sealed. As part of this, the items need minor cleaning and polishing from only 4 weeks of driving. Cost should not be a mystery.

They did a full detail in 8hrs? I wonder how many people they had working on the car at one time. I did a paint correction on a 2 door Toyota Yaris, removed all swirls and got as many RIDS as I could in the time I had and it took me all of 8 hours. NO interior NO wheels NO engine just wash, sprayed with Wolf Decon Gel, clay, polished and sealed. I could have done a little less on the polishing and it would have looked good for most customer but not what I knew this customer was looking for. Oh and I did not stop for lunch only a few sips of water as I worked.

The area of the country I am in I do not see charging $65 an hour I usually get around $40-45 an hour. I can very well see a detail on a BLACK car that has been repainted taking over 15hrs to detail, then add the Opti Coat to it being an additional $300-400 on top of the detail itself.

A lot of detail shops, even ones that are praised for such great work, really do not do the best jobs. They have a lot of inexperienced people working on the car at one time. Most use volume shop products that may look good because they are hiding the true look of the paint and not fixing the problems. There are 2 shops here that get great praises all over from word of mouth, reviews onlines and even car dealers using them. Well the dealer here used them and blew some $$$ and then asked me if I could fix it becuase the customer was about to back out of the deal. I am not saying all are like this, not saying the shop in CA is like this. but just like in most cases you get what you pay for, unless you run into the one a-hole that is just trying to rip you off. Do you research, get multiple quotes, ask a lot of questions then make your decision

who ever doesnt shop around and ask questions is a fool. its called being a smart consumer. Why cant people just answer a question and keep it moving, who cares. All this coating stuff is just hype and marketing, and since most people just want to be on a bandwagon all it takes is one well know detailer ( whos is being paid by the company) to say this is such a great product and everyone wants to try it. Its funny ever since 3D bought Autopia all the well know detailers praise their products. 3D has been around for years, I never seen one post from these same detailers praising their products.

Not that I`m agreeing with what he said, but the user whose post you`re referring to has a join date of January 2008 - so not exactly a new account...

Looks like it was worth the wait, too. Three years of biding his time just to jump in here with that stinging remark. Whoa, Autopia and 3D must be reeling from the blow.

And as for being a smart consumer, yeah I don`t see it. If you call one detailer and his price is too high for you, call another. Quality doesn`t come cheap, though, as should be evident to someone driving a 6-series on HREs. A smart consumer will shop around for the best price for the quality he can live with, not go online to a forum where he KNOWS this detailer is a key member and start a thread in hopes of bringing some ammo to bargain with.

Try this as a "smart consumer". Walk into a Mercedes dealership with 40k in your pocket and tell them you want a loaded S-class. When they say no, tell them that same amount will buy you a Lexus or Infiniti. Let us know what they say. Then go to a Mercedes forum and bash that dealership for gouging. Pretty smart, right?

That may be true and it also may be true that product development isn`t stagnant. In just a few years the market has exploded with some pretty cool new stuff. So continue to do your research, determine for yourself who and/or what constitutes legit, unbiased feedback, and select the products that meet your needs and standards.

3D doesn`t make any coatings, thanks for playing. The product in question is made by Optimum Polymer Technologies.

Don`t forget the part about living in the slum section of Trump Palace on barely enough salary to pay the rent, too.

`Cuz, you know, living beyond one`s means and pretending to be a baller is what smart consumerism is all about.

I never said 3D made coatings. I am aware that Opti coat is made by Optimum. My point is to show how everyone is so gullible to fall for all the marketing hype of every new product, as long as it is endorsed by a well know detailer. Every week someone is discovering the next great product. Second i would never walk into a mercedes dealership because the cars are garbage, I would walk into the lexus dealership first. I never seen so many people cry about a man asking about a price. This is a detailing forum, none of the responses are going to hurt my feelings, I find it humorous how sensitive alot of you are.

Maybe more reliable than a Mercedes, but the fit and finish and build quality of a Lexus doesn`t even compare.

Have you used the OptiCoat product? I`m guessing no, since it`s one item that lives up to and surpasses the hype. And we`re going on a couple of years now in the marketplace, with hundreds of pros and enthusiasts using the product and thousands of cars coated. Try the product before bashing it.

Hey, how does it feel to be so perfect and wise? Can you please tell me what I should spend my money on? I don`t mean detailing supplies, just in general. I appreciate your help. Thanks

PS: Can you also tell us how your experience was with OPTI COAT? Did you also wash your car with dawn weekly like David? How soon did Opti Coat fail for you? I knew I shouldn`t have trusted DF`s udates!!!!!!!!! So as far as LSP, what is the real deal we should all use? Thanks again!!!!

+1 When multiple people say the same thing consistently over a long period of time, that`s a pattern in my book.
