gtechniq g-4 glass polish/griot`s glass polish

in the last gtechniq giveaway at AF, i was a lucky dog and won a free bottle of gtechniq g4 nanotech glass polish. a great time to compare it to my usual griot`s glass polish. i got some friends to volunteer their 2001 dodge dakota pk
and 2004 infiniti fx35 for the test.
products used: griot garage glass polish
    gtechniq g4 nanotech glass polish
griot`s garage 6" glass white polishing pads
gtechniq g1 &g2 clear vision smart glass
    griot`s garage 6" da

after giving both vehicles a quick bath, i taped off the 2001 dodge dakota pick up and was able to pull it into my friend`s garage for the applications. the heat and humidity were pretty oppressive. i used the gg glass polish on the passenger side of the windshield and gtechniq g4 on the driver`s side. each product was applied on a separate gg white glass polish pad. the wind shield was heavily water marked and wiper blade scratched and of course i didn`t bring any other heavier cutting pads with me.
both polishes were in liquid form, the griot`s was a thicker consistency than the gtechniq g4. each side was polished cross hatch pattern, 4 passes in each direction, and then checked.
-both polishes seemed to have about the same cutting ability
-griot`s seemed to have a longer working time than the gtechniq
-griot`s was easier to remove than gtechniq dry, but a little water made the gtechniq easily removable.
-both applied easily but the gtechniq was a little easier to work and finished faster.
the white pads and polish were slow cutting and took a long time to reduce the windshield water marks and scratches. i believe an orange pad would have helped a lot. i repeated the polishing patterns four times on each side before the results were acceptable. i finished with a final polish of the entire windshield with the gtechnique g4. i really could not tell any difference between each side of the windshield as far as clarity was concerned.
of course a polishing would not be complete without a good sealant, so
i applied gtechniq clear vision smart glass. it left a very slick finish and was easy to apply.
the 2004 infiniti was in a little better shape and i followed the same polishing steps as the dodge truck. the windshield was also wiper blade scratched but three full passes on each side brought it back to an acceptable level. it was also finished with a gtechniq smart glass treatment. the owners were shocked at the difference in clarty.
if the gtechniq clear vision smart glass lasts for the 30,00 miles of use, it will definitely be the way to go. my thanks again to AF and gtechniq for the freebie g4 polish. good stuff !
P.S. i gave both vehicles a quick coat of chemical guys hishine acrylic spray sealant blitz. easy spray on/let haze/wipe off application. left a decent slick, shine. almost feels like a blend of acrylic and wax when applying.

I need a friend like you Steve. Great review. I won the Silo Seal, hopefully will get it next week. I bought the G4,G1&2 so I will be giving my wife`s car a full Gtechniq makover.

I see you got the smaller bottles of G1, how much was left after the 2 cars were done?

    Steve, nice review.

Am I correct then that you would buy based on price since they are so comparable?

hey troy, you know that is a consideration. most glass polishes use cerium oxide as the primary ingredient for polishing, which leaves a very fine, smooth finish on glass.
    griot`s glass polish-8oz 236ml @ 12.99
    griot`s fine glass polish- 16 oz @ 20.99
    gtechniq g4 nano tech glass polish app. 4oz 100ml @ 12.99

the gtechniq g4 nano tech glass polish was described as containing nano sized abrasives and citric acid. it seemed to be a little easier to work on the glass and finished faster than griot`s, but i honestly couldn`t tell any big difference in the results of clarity between both polishes.
if you haven`t polished glass in awhile, it`s not as easy as it looks and i think an assortment of cutting pads would help for the more abused windshields. you have to be careful not to overheat the laminate type safety windshield during polishing too, but the results can be pretty dramatic.

Thanks for the review - great looking results.

How large was your work area and how slow did you move the polisher? You mention the heat so wonder about the heat.

hey bunky. i was a little worried about too much heat build up, so i worked the entire half of the windshield, a little slower hand speed, and my da running at speed 5. it still takes a pretty good downward pressure to work the glass, so i hoped the larger working area would help dissipate any heat build up while polishing. i didn`t have any problems. it`s definitely not as easy as it looks on a very weathered windhield, but what a big difference it makes.
