Quick search of Google and sponsor website shows you can get a thickness gauge for $300 with a few choices.

Didn`t search for a microscope. Why do you feel one is needed, esp just starting out? (if I recall your intro correctly). Might be able to put that 300 toward something that will really generate income for your business.

There is only 1 paint thickness gauge that I know of that would be within your budget. I`m actually planning on getting one of these soon myself.
Paint Meter, Paint Gauge, Paint Gage - HighLineMeter.com
The others are over $600. As for the Microscope, first off there is no need in it IMO, and your looking at HUGE money.

Being able to tell to the micron how deep a scratch is, is impressive.

But is that something that will help you sell a detail to someone who doesn`t care how deep the scratch is as long as you can take it out? And if you can take it out, who gives a flip how deep the scratch is?

Don`t want to rain on your parade, ESD. But in another forum where you posted this question, a poster suggested a 20x jewlers loupe would provide similar information at much, much less expense. Not sexy, but easier to make an actual profit on.

I would think that a few times per year, you might run into a customer that would be impressed by the fact that a prospective detailer has this capability and might select that detailer over others because of it. Also, if I was a pro, I would want one to make sure I didn`t go through any clear coat.

that may be true but i can almost guarantee if you start talking about all sorts of high tech optical imaging of paint and clear coat people are going to look at you like you are crazy most people dont care how you do it.. they just want the car looking good again... you will maybe get 1 person out of 50 that want all that information..
"One day you will have to stop being a Muppet...So take the hand out of yer butt and walk for yourself."

Claying does not mean "High end". It means quality/caring. So would actually learning a trade instead of "Hey I can wash and wax a car, so I`ma gonna be a detailer."

Since I would be among those 1 in 50, perhaps my viewpoint is skewed. People might initially look at me like I was crazy if I brought out the thickness gauge, but by the time I was through with them, they would wonder why my competitor did not have one.
