The $400 dollars sun guns 3m sells is just a 35-50wattbulb Ina cordless drill body, approx 12volts. The bulbs are available at hardware stores less than 3 dollars. Then, just sacrifice some cheap drill.

Here`s a detailed thread about garage lighting in general that also covers LED work lights using photographic stands. The LEDs blast swirls and the light stands are resonably priced.

I use the DIY LED setup outlined in this thread over at AutoGeek:
DIY LED Work Light (much better than halogen!) - Auto Geek Online Auto Detailing Forum
And it IS much better than the halogens. It`s absolutely BRUTAL for finding defects. My main complaint is the stand doesn`t go high enough and it`s pretty light weight. I`ll be replacing it with a better one soon.
Their all fine, a sun gun is mean`t for color matching. It`s able to defect more colors aka a higher CRI. It`s abilities don`t really help a detailer, it`s mean`t for a painter.
Dug deep in the archives for this thread.
Dean.
LED light all the way!

• Stirling Moss once said “There are two things no man will admit he cannot do well: drive and make love.”
• But then the smarter Albert Einstein said, “Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.”
The issue is, you can`t expect to see every defect with one source of light. When detailing I use, 1 4200 lumen canopy light, 4 500w halogens and a nice headlight with 4 different setting. Sometime it`s the angle or the temperature of the light that makes the difference, not the "brightness".
Sun is the final factor, all these light sources makes "perfection" so darn variable.
