Boyd Coddington One Step Wheel Cleaner - Review

For this review I’m going to share my thoughts on using Boyd Coddington One Step Wheel Cleaner for the very first time:

*Bias Review Disclaimer* AG sent me this item in exchange for a reivew at no-charge. Ok now that bit of housekeeping is out of the way… Onto my review!

    From AG’s copy:
Boyd Coddington One Step Wheel Cleaner is an all-purpose, acid-free, and pH balanced rim and wheel cleaner that is 100% safe on all wheels (including billet aluminum!). Using the unique color changing formula, Boyd Coddington lets you know when it’s working by turning from clear to red when contact with brake dust occurs! Whether you have expensive custom-made wheels, or you just like to keep your wheels brake-dust free, Boyd Coddington One step Wheel Cleaner is just what you need!

Over the years I’ve used a lot of different wheel cleaners. You name it - I’ve probably tried it. All in an effort to keep my dust happy BMW rims clean. And as much a Sio2 or SiC coating helps to create a dust barrier allowing for easy maintenance cleaning with nothing more than a soapy brush… every so often I still need to break out the “big guns” and use a ferrous metal removing product.

Enter Boyd Coddington One Step Wheel Cleaner.

    Instructions

    1) Spray on Wheel Cleaner holding bottle 6-8 inches from the wheel surface. Spray the entire rim, caliper and tire.

    2) As the product begins to work and release the dirt and brake dust, it will change from clear to red. - Check

(The above GIF = 3 ½ minutes timelapse.)

    3) Allow the product to work for up to 5 minutes. If product dries, simply re-apply.

    4) Use high-power water to rinse the cleaner from the wheels. Re-apply if necessary.

    6) Dry wheel with a clean towel or premium microfiber.

(I used my MasterBlaster after the below was taken to dry the rim)

Overall Boyd Coddington One Step Wheel Cleaner knocked out 90% of the brake dust/ grim after the first application. The remaining 10% was due to me missing a few spots and required a follow-up application:

    Observations

When I first smelled Boyd Coddington One Step Wheel Cleaner “cherry” scent I initially thought it was just going to be a rebranded version of Iron-X. But it’s not! What impressed me with Boyd Coddington One Step Wheel Cleaner is how well it clings and doesn’t run off onto the ground the moment you spray it. This allows for better cleaning because the product stays on the intended surface and has a better chance of breaking down and lifting away the contaminants w/o the need for vigorous scrubbing.

To test this, hypothesis I grabbed a bottle of another ferrous iron remover, 3D BDX, and sprayed ½ of another rim with it and the other ½ with Boyds:

Can you see how much thicker Boyds is on the left? (sorry for the photo not being centered)

This gave me an idea - what if i put a foaming sprayer on the bottle?

Would using it boost the already impressive cling?? Short answer: YES!

    50/50 using both sprayers:

And time lapse of both sides - take a look at the bottom of the tire:

Do you see how much is running off the left vs right?

On to another rim using the foaming sprayer only:

Take a look after ~4 minutes at how little product has run off the tire and onto the ground:

Practically nothing. It stays right where I want it on the rim surface cleaning:

    Conclusion

Boyd Coddington One Step Wheel Cleaner is a great product and one you shouldn’t overlook. I was honestly surprised how well it works and how little I needed to agitate with a brush afterwards. I used ~25% of the bottle to clean all 4 rims - I probally would have used less had I not been playing around with various sprayers and trying to make cool GIF’s for you guys

If you’re in the market for a wheel cleaner make sure to check this one out!

    YES! Angus Review!! haha

Looks like a great product - I noticed the bottle states it "Protects your wheels to keep them cleaner.." Did you notice any protection (seemingly) present after use?

Haha, thanks man. I do my best to not dispoint!!

As far a residual protection: good question. I completely missed that on the label (there`s a little too much going on IMO). I`ll have to pay attention and see if the rate of re-dusting is less over the coming days... stay tuned!

I am not picking on this particular brand, but when just anyone can put a name on a detailing product, it tells me the markup is quite high for detailing chemicals. This gets back to the discussion about the what is the best. When one claims a product is the best and they have not tried 98% of those on the market, how can one say it is the best.

Thanks, Angus, for your always "objective"(IE, unbiased) and video/picture-intensive review.
It is another product I need to consider for my search of an effective non-acid brake dust cleaner. (Please see thread: Suggestions for Non-Acid Wheel Rim Brake Dust Cleaner=)
At about $17.00 for 16 ounces, it`s in line price-wise with OPT FerreX , Sonax Full Effect Wheel Cleaner, or P21S Regular Wheel Cleaner (OR the Gel) to name a few similar product offerings for this type of detailing task.

I hear you, Bunky. It`s a valid point. I`m sure the mark up is huge.

    Thanks, Lonnie!

Sonax FE is great, but runs too quickly down and on the ground. P21S liquid & gel are just so-so IMHO. I`m looking forward to trying out D-143 - sure hope I like it considering I`ve got gallon on the way!!!!!
