Review: M101 Rupes Conc Detailing Shampoo

I was one of the Winners of the recent Rupes contest on AGO. I received their QD, spray sealant, and a "prep" type soap. Plus; they threw in a pair of Rupes knee pads and a mug.

This is a review of the soap.

So, what is a "prep" soap? I dunno. It says this soap is the soap to use prior to polishing with the Bigfoot system. We know soap doesn`t strip LSPs - and Rupes doesn`t make this claim. So, to me it`s just a good soap with no wax or gloss type stuff to leave behind.

Let`s get something strait right off. First, I wanted this soap to suck, or just be lackluster. I like Rupes, sort of a fan boy... Because, they revolutionized DA polishing and continue to bring unique stuff to market - like the iBrid. Look at everyone`s new foam pads now - all Rupes copies. I like that this company leads the pack.

On the other hand - what could they know about making soap? I`ve tried around 30 soaps, there are some real good ones out there... I was wondering if this soap was just going to be a relabeled something or other, which would be fine - but it wouldn`t command the price ($17.99 ~ 16oz).

So, once I got the soap, I quickly became 99% sure this wasn`t just another relabeled product. First, the packaging (comes in a box) and bottle are unique. Second, the soap is clear and a thick gel like consistency - much more gel-like and thicker than most soaps (think hair gel):

Third, the dilution is uniquely expressed: 2-4 capfuls per 12 liters (~ 3 gallons).

Anyway, I decided to go 4 capfuls for a full 5 gallon bucket. Cap is small, prolly less than 15 mls - so say I used about 2oz of soap...

    Wookies Fist mitt:

First wheels were cleaned and car foamed using Maxi Suds II:

    Rupes soap mixed:

    Thick suds drip:

As I mentioned before, I wanted to say this soap was overpriced and just meh...

But, on the contrary - I loved this soap... Why?

    1. It`s a prep type soap - and cleans very well. The mitt glides like its on air. But, it doesn`t inhibit beading. If anything, it cleaned so well it improved the beading.

Beading after wash - wax is Dodo Juice Blue Velvet Pro and a couple months old or so:

    2. Dilution is extremely good and soap is extremely sudsy and foamy.

    3. This is one of those soaps that is so good, after a few dunks of the mitt in the rinse bucket - you can`t tell the difference between the wash bucket solution and the rinse bucket solution. Both are filled with suds (rinse has no mitt):

    4. Suds do not die. After the wash I couldn`t tell any difference I the solution from when I started.

    5. Shampoo is clear and smells like nothing, but somehow it seems "special" for all the reasons I mentioned above.

So, in the end - I have to say this is an awesome soap. I rink it would be great for coated cars, waxed cars, or cars prior to polishing. Although it`s a little costly, the dilution is great and I feel it`s worth the money if you want a top notch soap.

The only critique I have is I wish it had some light scent. Something that just smells fresh and clean. But I do like that it is clear, which is fairly unique for soaps.

Boxes were so nice I stuck them in my computer room next to Ivan:

Re: Review: M101 Rupes Conc Detailing Shampoo

One of the primary targets of this soap was rinse-ability, hence the fragrance-free formula.

I have always judged a soap by how quickly and how well you can rinse it from the surface, even if you do something stupid like wash half of a car before rinsing. Some soaps, particularly those with additional chemicals, soaps or silicones can leave a film behind quickly. If you don`t rinse (almost) immediately the water beading will be severely dampened, at least initially.

With M101 Soap, you should notice almost complete rinse-off, even after exaggerated dwell times. Because it rinses so clean, so quickly, it really is an ideal soap pre or post polishing or over already protected surfaces were you don`t want anything to interfere with the sheen, protection, or water beading characteristics.

When I wash my car, I like to wash half of it, rinse, and then dry. Because of this, M101 Soap fits the bill perfectly. Also, my car and motorcycles are coated, so I don`t like to use anything which can clog the delicate surface structure and impede water beading. If you want to add protection with this soap, I would recommend lightly misting the surface with P808 prior to towel drying. It works awesome as a drying aid, will immediately make the surface slick, prevent streaking on humid days, and create intense water beading that lasts for at least a month (3 in my unscientific testing).

RUPES is not a chemical manufacturer, we are a tool maker (or at least we were). However, we did put the same passion and engineering into creating a limited chemical line as we have our tools. We also have Dylan von Kleist (who has a background with Adams), myself (BLACKFIRE as well as working with Optimum and Meguiars in testing applications) and, of course, Jason Rose (Meguiars) so we have some pretty good talent to draw on when it comes to chemical creation.

    Thanks for your review.

How does it compare to Ultima? I`m glad to see a review of the new Rupes offerings. I have been leery of trying any of the new Rupes products fearing they would not live up to the Rupes name. Looks like I`ll have to give them a try.

It`s better than Ultima IMO. I like Ultima, but never loved it.

I`m prolly never going to use it to foam a car. I have certain soaps I prefer to use for that.

Should have used P808 on it since you were going to wax.
