Quickie Review: M105

Quick Reivew:



M105 is simply the best compound I have used and is extremely versitile.



Compared to: Menzerna Power Gloss and 3M Extra Cut on White/Orange/Yellow/Purple Wool/Meguiars Solo Wool Light/100 Percent Twisted Wool.



We tested this polish vs. two of my favorites to see what how it stacked up. We also used a varity of pads to test the finish left behind, and wiped the finished surface with DuPont Prep-Sol to ensure all oils had been removed.



M105 simply cut more and faster then the other two (with PowerGloss being the slowest) and leaved the finished surface far nicer then the other two with each pad tested. It was the only product that fully removed 1500 sanding scratches on one pass (with a full wool) vs. two for Extra Cut and our for Powergloss.



We finished polishing with 3M Ultra Fina on a blue pad. With 3M Extra Cut as well as Powergloss on each of the wool pads, the finished required a middle step of Menzerna SIP on a LC White Pad to remove the marring before being able to be finished to perfection. On the Orange Pad and under Power Gloss was able to be finished out where as 3M Extra Cut required a third step on any pad.



M105 was also able to remove moderate marring on a white pad while finishing marring free (though it did leave hologramming that still required a second step).



It really worked well on a LC Purple paint on several different paints we used it on, as it removed most defects and left the surface ready for a final jeweling to ensure perfection.



The downsides are that using two much product will result in the product gumming up as well as the pad will "load" with product rather quickly. Once this happens, it will begin to gum up as well. So make sure you use a small amount (three SMALL dots, about half a dime or so each).

TH001 have you used HTEC, if so how does stack up?

HTEC isn`t as good at removing defects as 3m 3000 RC. It seems more like a medium polish to me.

Todd, Besides for the porsche you told me about, what other paints did you get to try it out on? After our conversation the other day, I have a 12 oz sample coming on Tuesday from ADS. Wed I have a 03 black Z06. If I can eliminate one step out of my polishing, it will save me some time for sure.



If you got to try out the M105 on any harder clears, what speed did you run the rotary at with wool.

Apparently, it uses a new type of specialized micro-abrasive, rather than the regular diminishing abrasives.

I suspect 105 uses an aluminum oxide abrasive

I guess most polishing abrasives are Al2O3, but they differ from each other in size, shape and cluster variation. A smaller number use silica or ceric oxide.

Glad to see that you are loving the M105!



I picked up a bottle a little while ago, but haven`t been able to do much detailing lately due to the weather.



I did a Plymouth Prowler the other day and did a little testing myself with the 105. Like you said, it removes serious defects and leaves the paint ready for final polishing. I polished an entire panel with the 105 using a purple foamed wool pad and when I was done, I did a little two foot area with 3M Extra Cut to see the difference. The section I did with the Extra Cut left a considerable amount of marring, but the section I did with the 105 had zero marring, but did leave some minor holograms which were easily cleaned up with Ultrafina.



I did experience the product gumming up as you mentioned. I was using a purple foamed wool pad and tried a pure twisted wool pad as well. Both pads made the product gum up. I was restricted for time on the detail, so I switched to 3M Extra Cut for the rest of the car.



I`m not sure if it was this particular car or not, but it seemed to dry up rather quickly using a wool pad. If I had used less product, I feel I would have been dry buffing. What speed did you use when buffing with a wool pad and how many passes did you do? I`m really eager to try it out using a foam cutting pad to see the results.



It definitely seems like a winner. It should make a 3-step polish in only 2 steps.



I am really looking forward to working more with this product.

How much cut would you say #M105 does? Heavy/High compound? This product seems to be the heavy cut for those awful vehicles, SIP say being the medium/high polish. I`ve used HTEC and found it`s a pad/rotary dependent application. Glad to see there is something that fills the 1-2 combo for correction, even better that it only gums up.



Does this product eliminate the need for 3M 3000 Extra Cut/HTEC?

On Megs scale its a 12. Formerly, the most aggressive was a 10. By comparison, DACP is a 6.
