In my shop at work I have dual 4ft florescent lights turned vertically in each corner, quad 4ft`ers on the walls level with most body panels, along with 6 8ft dual fixtures on the ceiling (its a big shop), plus 2 dual halogen stands.

I have somewhat similar to Mr Clean, but I also have moveable halogens I use. They are great in the winter for a heat source as well

I have banks for T8 lights (4 lights per bank ) throughout each bay in my garage. I have cheaper T5`s on the side walls and moveable 1000W halogens for spot working.

    Re: lights for garage

It`s funny you should ask but I was thinking the same thing about my garage.

I was at Lowe`s the other day and looking at florescent lights and they have these lights called "high intensity" florescent lights that appear to be twice as bright as the conventional lighting.

These are available in both 4 foot and 8 foot flavors and I think these will make a huge difference...

T8HO fluorescent are the way to go for sure if you want general task lighting.

I use all 6500K tubes in mine; pay attention to the "CRI" of the tubes you buy -- the higher the better. Otherwise the color output will not look very natural.

I agree with Charlie. I have 6500K in mine and the light is a very white light.

I was always under the impression that T5`s were more expensive than T8`s? I have one four-bank of T5`s that cost me about $130. They were strongly recommended by a friend who is an electrician, so I just went with what he told me. Maybe I should have researched a little more.

Where did you get the fixture from? That sometimes makes all the difference. I have a 3` T5 with two bulbs which I paid $35 for at Home Depot. Slightly more expensive than T8, but not much.

Main advantages with a T5 are higher light output with much less energy consumption; however there are fewer options for T5 fluorescent tubes, which in some ways is a disadvantage depending on what you`re looking to get out of the lights.

    4-Lamp Decorative Linear Fluorescent - 4-Lamp Decorative - Linear Fluorescent e-conolight

They are similar to these. If you use the drop-down menus and spec T5s, 5000k lamps and specular reflector, no motion sensor or emergency ballast, these come in at $124. My friend ordered mine from a wholesaler. I`ve only got one right now, but hoping to add 2 or 3 more. For such a small size, they put out a ton of light.

    Re: lights for garage

Ah... yeah that`s a much fancier fixture than the one I`ve got. Probably accounts for the cost. Mine is just a bare fixture without reflectors I just leave loose to hang on walls or shine up at rocker panels from the floor.

Very handy to toss light right where I need it.
