Kids are grown. Finally can get back into detailing! WOW!, Have things changed

Kids are finally finished with college. Oldest just got married. I can finally get back into detailing. Nsomething I have not done in a serious way since the 1990s. So it`s been a wee bit. It is crazy the number of products manf , brands tools etc.

I am sure I could have just grabbed basic Meguiar`s products which was mostly all there was locally last century. But no no I decided to "RESEARCH" down the rabbit hole I went. My head hurts.

I have 2 vehicles to begin working on 2016 Lexus 350ES and 2007 GMC Seirra Duramax. Did I mention they were both black!?! Lucky me. From what I have seen their clear coats are polar opposites in terms of hardness. Lexus like warm lipstick GMC diamond hard. Neither vehicle has had corrected paint that I know of. Well other than the Lexus dealer doing their "prep" that translates into putting wool swirl marks on every inch of paint surface. Did not even charge me for it. Nice of them I thought.

Focusing mostly on getting the paint corrected and protected

For tool I have most of the basics:
5+ wash mitts (Rag Co Cyclone mitts)
Edgeless MF towels
Pressure washer (gas, 3.2k 2.8gpm)
Foam Cannon (MJJC Pro)
Various brushes etc

Have clay aggressive and mild.
Iron Decon Spray
Meg Hyperwash
Apex Auto Wash for Foam

For polishers:

DA Forced Rot
DA 8mm
Rotary
(6", 5",3" backing plates)
¼" Die Grinder

For pads. Another area with major change. Use to be wool and foam period. There are stupid amounts of pads now. I think I spent a week just reading up on pad tech and usage.

6x Uro-Fiber 50/50 B/W 6"
6x Uro-Tech Yellow 5"
4x each Uro-Tech Yellow and White 3"
6x Uro-Tech White 5"

3x LC Black Sealant Wax Pad 6.5"


For Compound/Polish/Protection

Sonax Perfect Finish
Poor Boys Black Hole Glaze
Finish Kare fk1000p. Think its actually called BWM-101 now.


My plan was the standard prep of:
Foam
Bucket Wash
Decon
Clay

GMC
Forced Rotation Uro-Fiber 50/50 3D One
Prep wipe
Rotary U-T Yellow Perfect Finish
Prep wipe
DA U-T White PoorBoy BH
DA LC Black FK1000P 2 coats 24hr cure between

Lexus

F R Uro-Fiber 50/50 3D One less dwell time and pressure
PW
Rotary White Perfect Finish if not geting break down switch to yellow
PW
DA LC Black Poorboys BH
DA LC Black FK1000P

This is my intial game plan. At least till I actually get pad/polish on paint.

Any suggestions, tips, recommendations?

I do have an air compressor for pad cleaning.

I figure I can decide if I want to stick with FK1000P come mid fall or go to a coating. Did not want to add a coating in right now as so much of this stuff is new to me products etc.

You can skip second or both panel wipes. Only really needed for coatings. I personally would do one at the end of all polishing.

Non of those products any I ‘d use/used so I’ll let others chime in.

Yes I was doing the wipes to check correction but I guess really it`s just pulling tge oils vs fillers like in black hole. Makes sense to just do it at final polish.

Many of the newer compounds/polishes are "see through," meaning you don`t have to remove them (or do a panel wipe) to check your progress. Personally, I (and a few others) have found the "new" Turtle Wax, Hybrid Solutions/Hybrid Solutions-PRO Lines to be well above average, and give great results (they were introduced about 3 years ago, and have been my "go-to" products ever since).

Thanks. Yes the products back when I used were very opaque while buffing. They also dusted very badly. Looking forward to these new products.

I have been reading about the positives of various turtle wax pro4. To be honest it kind of surprised me as the brand at least in the 90s was seen as sort of mass advo basic consumer grade products. Now I have seen a number of them even recommended by pro detailers.
