Repainted the fender on my GTO after a burn through.

So the other day I discovered a pretty good sized scratch/blemish on the fender of my GTO. I already had a feeling that it wouldn`t come out due to how deep it was and also being that my clear is already on the thinner side. That being said I went after it any way with the mentality I would get it fixed.

Sure enough I got the dreaded paint transfer on my pad along with a blotch on the fender.

So at this point I figured I pretty much had everything needed to prep and dust in a bit of color then re clear it. So after speaking to my painter I got to work.

First was a bit of disassembly. Fender emblem removed, dropped down the corner of the bumper and removed the headlight.

Then masked off the area and sanded it all out with 1k grit Mirka Abralon. After sanding I wiped it all down and remasked the area by back masking around all the edges. Followed by bagging off the rest of the vehicle.

Once that was complete another prep wipe followed by a tack rag. Then I dusted a bit of base coat over the area(s). After about 45min it was time to lay down the clear.

For a spray gun I was using my Iwata LPH80 with a 1.2 tip. Fan set wide open, flow set about 3 turns back from closed and about 30-32psi for clearing. The first coat was a very light tack coat just to give something the heavier coats to bond too.

After about 15 min I started laying it on a bit heavier with 15min intervals between coats. 3 heavy coats later and we are in business.

The next morning it was time to sand and polish to level and dirt nibs or minor orange peel. I sanded with 800, 1500, 2000, 3000 Mirka disks.

Compounding was handled via- Rupes Mark ll 21mm, B/S urowool, IGL F1

Finish polish- Rupes Mark ll 21, B/S yellow pad, 3D One.

Being that it wasn`t baked Ill give it a while to out gas before sealing it just to be safe.
