1987 Porsche 928 S4 from gray to black again...

1987 Porsche 928 S4 w/ 93k miles.



First I want to say thanks to Bret, he made the drive down to help out for a few days. Then he took over with the polishing. I am sure that had nothing to do with the fact that I just got a new Metabo the day before. I could not pry that rotary out of his hands.



A few before pics from when I went to look at the car:























The owner was kind enough to drop off the car on Thursday before I went to work. So I vac`d the seats and applied some Leatherique RO to the seats and let the car sit out in the hot sun while I was at work.

Wheel wells, wheels and tires got 777 APC 1:4 and scrubbed.

Wheels where in good shape, just one of the fronts had some crub rash. Otherwise there where pretty clean. Inner barrels where pretty dirty (brake dust.) I tired some of the REAL WHEEL CLEANER by PPC and it would not cut the old dust. I used PB SnR and that cut it without issue. I used both products as a spray and rinse.



Then we did a wash with Duragloss 901, sheepskin mits and 2 bucket method.



Pulled the car inside and clayed. I used blue magic clay and Bret used the sonus green clay, both used body shine #20 as a lube. We where suprised to see a lack of bonded contaminants. The car has been sitting outside for a while as the owner was building a garage.







Then it was time to start polishing and the testing of products began.



Here is Bret trying out my new metabo using the edge system and a green wool pad w/ presta 1500 polish. I am telling you that this setup is so smooth, it makes using a rotary almost effortless.











The defects just laughed at us. So it was time to step it up to:



black wool P1500

green wool P1500

green foam PSMR



Not sure how much we are going to cut to get those deep scratches out.



Darn bulb blew on one side.







Decided to do some wetsanding:











Heck lets go for another round:























Give us 80 total man hours to have the car looking like that.



Bret continued to polish while I worked on the interior. Most of the carpet in the porsche comes out in sections. So I removed the sections that I could, laid them out on the garage floor and used our kirby on them. The wife just loves when I used "her stuff" on details.



By this time a camry had arrived that I booked a few days before. So I gave the inside of the camry a good vac while Bret happily buff away on the porsche. I fired up the mytee extractor and used it on the carpets of the porsche and also used it on the camry interior (seats and carpets.)



Bret was about halfway done polishing, so we called it a day. We setup the airmoves and a fan to dry the inside of the camry. A few hours later it was 90% dry.



Got up the next day and decided to knock out the camry first with a one step polish, ect. We let it sit outside all nice and clean only to be rained on a few hours later while we worked on the porsche.



Bret wanted to try out the Menzerna SIP with the black wool. He had been using the presta 1500 but wanted more cut. He liked working with the SIP, but as its rated at a 2000 cut. It was not enough for this trashed paint.



Like Ryan said use very little of the SIP, here is Bret posing with the amount that he used on a wool pad:







So I remembered that I had a bottle of vintage (1993) Presta 1000 cut polish that a friend had given me a few weeks ago. I shook it up for 15-20 mins. Bret gave it a try and was happy that it even had a longer working time then the presta 1500.

Looks like we finally found a winning combo. We finsihed the rest of the car with this combo. Bret still happily running the metabo and I was using the PC.



We then took the car back outside for a Z7 wash to get all of the dust/splatter off of the car. Mind you that the presta line does not dust that much at all.

After the wash Bret and I did an application of ZAIO applied with white LC pads PC6. That pretty much wrapped up Sat, another long day. The 928 was just looking a "little better" then when it arrived. Bret headed home and I will take it from here. Thanks for all your help man!!!



Sunday morning I did 1x of Z5pro and an application of Z8 a few hours later. Also applied CS to the rear wing. Time was running short and I still had to quick vac the carpets and get them all installed in the correct position. I also vac`d the rear hatch area. Cleaned all the glass and did the 2nd step of the leatherique process by cleaning the seats w/ pristine clean. This is some high quality leather for sure. Nice and thick. I gave the interior dash a quick wipedown with the same towel that I used to remove the prestine clean. I then applied a quick coat of Z-16 to the tires. I think I missed it, but Bret had applied ZAIO to the wheels on sat.

I`ve looked at a number of major restores over the past week as I have absorbed the info on this site. But buddy, this gets my vote as one of the prettiest finishes from an absolute abomination. Letting a Porsche get into that condition should be criminal. At least my Range Rover (which looks worse) was used weekly offroad to earn it`s "stripes".

holy S**t you have amazing patience i could never deal with that haha. i hope he paid you like a grand for all that work LOL very nice! ! do you have any experience tips with the leatherique for me, i just got mine in the mail yesterday and im waiting for my leather seats to come in the mail.

Leatherique tips- for best results apply RO to the seats when its warm/hot out.

1. Vac seats to get all loose dirt out.

2. Spray RO directly onto seats, wearing medical type gloves work the RO into the seats. Don`t be afraid to use alot of the RO.

3. Then let the car sit out in the hot sun w/ the windows up for at least 1 day, more days never hurt. You can also apply more of the RO after some of it gets absorbed into the leather.

4. Apply PC to the seat uppers and work in by hand.

5. Med size cotton towel & bucket of warm water.

6. Wipe off each section with damp towel, flip towel and keep wiping till towel is no longer dirty.

7. Dry section with clean dry towel.

8. Continue with next section of seat.

2500 paper, looking at the pics you will notice that the first round of wetsanding did not remove all of the deep scratches. So we hit the area again with the 2500.



Bret was doing most of the rotary work. He did the front and rear plastic bumper covers with black wool and presta 1500. He had to strike a balance between defect removal and not causing any damage to the plastic areas. I followed those areas with ZPC, white LC pad and PC6 x2.

Also I just got these cool new sandpaper velcro for the pc. It`s actually not sandpaper but a sanding disc. It`s got a cushoin velcro backing and rinses easily and lasts. I got a 1500 and 2500 grit. I got them from another member, but they are made by Mirka. It`s like a wooven fibre sanding disc that is built to last.



I used it on a couple spots on a car to remove the orande peel and it worked excellent. Speeds up time in sanding.

I haven`t seen this style Porsche look THIS good in forever! It was like stepping back in time. Amazing results on the outside, but if I were to just see the interior, I would have never guessed this was a 20 year old car.

Ryan, Interesting setup, not sure if I am ready to try something like that yet. At what speed do you run the PC? Is it ment to be used wet?

I use speed 2 or 3. I use a damp mf and wipe the spot down every foot. I use it mainly for the flat panels.
