Or, How To Fix A DIY Paint Job...

The owner of this 1965 MGB is quite proud of the restoration work that he has accomplished to date. Mind you, no one else has touched the car. Mechanically sound, it starts everytime( :woohoo: ). But, as we know, the learning curve for applying BC/CC is quite steep, and he came to us for a little help.

Since he had reapplied most of the trim pieces, we had an understanding that our sanding and polishing would not get every little crevice. We agreed that that we could produce a beautiiful "Five Footer", i.e. a finish that looks super, from five feet away.

I`ll cover our various steps after the pictures

    Here`s an establishing before shot

Here`s a look at the hood (or is that a bonnet?) Notice the lack of definition of the reflected fluorescent bulb and significant orange peel. Not just the hood, this is typical of every panel.

    And several fisheyes, of course!

And some work in progress, this is after 4000 grit sanding, but before polishing. And, yes, wetsanding is quite messy!

And a few after shots, which should speak for themselves... :dance

Holes here are for the rack and badging...

And here is the "Five Footer"

    Here are the steps involved:

We use the Mirka "Fast Finish" system, which employs a pneumatic orbital sander

(Note, we use the word `pass` to mean accomplishing the goal of that particular abrasive. We may go over a panel ten times to achieve that goal. This is when we use our `good eye` to evaluate our progress.

    One pass with 1500 grit

    One pass with 2000 grit

    One pass with 4000 grit

One pass with Mequiar`s Diamond Cut (rotary/medium foam)

One pass with Mequiar`s DACP #83 (rotary/medium foam)

One pass with Mequiar`s Speed Glaze (PC/finish foam)

    Klasse Twins

$350! Yes, he got a real bargain. One of my assistants may have said it best, "Jim, that`s the most important part of a $4,000 paint job."

Oh well, he`ll spread the word, but hopefully not the price!

Great work on a classic car. It`s great to see them being kept in tip-top shape like that one appears to be.

Two full days! And, believe me, it is very tedious work. Not terribly difficult, just really tedious, and tuff to stay at continuously.

Also, it`s very easy to slip up and lose any earnings on a job like that! Looks superb Jim. :brit :xyxthumbs

Great example of a case where wetsanding, *done right* was just what was called for.

Looks like the Mirka system is working well for you.
