swirl removal test

alrite guys im not near the level as most of you,being 17. but i thought id test out my swirl removal skills with my moms car. I am not going to waste alot of product and time in this car because its leased and she doesnt care about swirls. these pics just say it all... she takes it to a car wash once a week and it has not been cleaned by me at all. there are swirls like this all over the car. if this doesnt convince someone to not take their car to a car wash i dont know what will. ok well its a 2006 audi a4 cabriolet. I just snapped some direct sun pics of the trunk and only worked on a very small vertical part of the trunk, the one in the pics. i did 2 passes with ssr2.5 on an sonus orange cutting pad. These pics are with no light polish to clean it up and no wax. i wouldnt put a whole day into this car because its not worth it, but im happy to know that i can remove some bad swirling now for the future. let me know what u think. note: in some of the pics there are swirls in other areas, i just didnt polish those, just this little left vertical section

Good job!!! Looks like you got about 95% of the swirls out.

Thats a great job. Very good for being so young. You`ll make a good detailer in the near future. How long did it take you to go over then entire car?

thanks. yep, it was done on a pc. I think if i wanted the rest out i woulda moved down to ssr2 on a lighter pad, there was some micromarring so ssr2 would of gotten that out nicely. and livin, like i said i didnt bother with the whole car cause its leased and my mom doesnt care about the swirls so it would just be a waste of products. i would love to tackle a car like that but id rather put the time an products into someone who needs it.

Looks like it hazed up pretty good from the SSR2.5. Try following that bad boy up with SR2 and a polishing pad, I bet it would look 10x better after that.

yep i agree. honestly though this was just a swirl removal test. its no where near perfect, i was just trying to see if everything i learned on here could help me get the bulk of the defects out, and it did. my plan for the whole car would of been ssr2.5 on a orange cutting pad at 5-6. 2 passes in the worst areas. then move it down to ssr2 on a green sonus and then probably just hit it with the lsp. im considering going an doing the other side of the trunk soon with the follow up polish just to see how it turns up. but i understand its not perfect, that wasnt my aim with this

I`d do the whole car just for experience. That`s what I decided to do with my dad`s minivan. He doesn`t care whether it has swirls or not, but I wanted to see how much better I could make it look, so I just detailed it for Father`s Day. More experience can`t hurt, even if it costs you some money in products.

yea i saw your minivan thread max, think i remember a green minivan with swirls worse than the ones i posted. but your rite, it would be awesome practice to do the whole thing. and she has had the car 2 months... those swirls are solely from car washes. i never even got to touch the thing. i dont really know how the rest of the paint looks because ive only seen the back in direct sun when it sits in the garage. but im guessing if the vertical trunk panel looks THAT bad, the rest is gonna suck

Parsippany made me thing of the Star-Ledger and how they have a bagillion and 500 different versions of the paper. And how NJ people don`t know what county or state they are in....



...but that looks good for just one type of polish. Personally I would have sacrificed some swirl removal for less hazing by using a less agressive polish if I knew I wasn`t going to be following it up with a milder polish, but that`s a trade off for sure. Still a very good improvement.

I`d do the car. For the amount of product you`ll use ($5?) why not. I`m sure she`ll be happy you at least did a good deed. Maybe show her how to wash, or wash it for her on your spare time? Just being a good son you know.

yea u rite steve. i normally do "good deeds" for them all the time. free interior cleaning and wash/wax, but i mean its just kind of depressing knowing that i`ll put all that time into it and then have it look just as bad 2 weeks later. and she doesnt have the time to wash it the right way and she leasing it so she really doesnt care too much. im gonna go do the other half of the trunk later and add m80 into the routine to show you guys that if i wanted it perfect i can get it perfect and just one question steve. is micromarring basically just the light swirls you cant really get rid of with a cutting pad and heavy polish? or are the actually caused by the pad. because i know when using a rotary you need to finish the job off with a pc to get rid of all the small defects the rotary couldnt hit

I think the radioactive waste that pollutes your dirty, economically depressed town from the uranium ore refinery operations conducted during WWII have finally caught up with your mental faculties helping to explain your long list of stupid, far from witty comments....



...but this thread helps to show how with the proper pad / polish combo, the PC can be effective in removing that type of defect even from hard Audi clear coats. Following up with a finer polish would clean it up nice.

i didnt even bother trying to figure out what he meant with that it sounded like an insult though. I`ll work on the car some more later and post some pics up for you guys. i should have finished it off instead of just posting pics after the initial polish, my b
