I find that rock-chips occur mainly from high-speed driving. I believe you need to be doing about 80mph in order for a rock chip to occur. I think that is my problem. Oh and then there are the trucks!

I disagree. The rock may need to be traveling at high speed, but think about how fast a rock comes flying at your car when you`re doing 55mph behind a truck and a rock shoots toward your car from the tire. It`s going pretty fast, and your 55mph speed just adds to the force of the impact.

I got two stone chips last summer when I was coming back from a kayaking trip. I was going past a gravel pit, and there was a dump truck coming out of there. He was only going maybe 25mph, but when I passed him, I got nailed with at least one stone, that managed to take two little bits of paint off of my door. (I was going roughly 60mph BTW)

There are a lot of variables when it comes to rock chips, but one sure way to get one is to drive fast. You can still get a few while cruising at the speed limit, but like you said, there are those rocks which have already been launched from another direction that are screaming towards your brand new paint/finish. Something we just can`t avoid as long as dump trucks are allowed on the road.
