Hey, this pissing contest is really great and all, but those of us who work 72 hours a week and still can`t come close to affording a Porsche or even the more "inexpensive" Vette are feeling left out!!

maybe a new job is needed then
B&W Speakers, Transparent cables, Classe amps coming soon
Ok, I apologize for starting this. I just happen to have very strong convictions against american made automobiles. I`m not a snob, nor am I trying to be "snobbish" so I also apologize if I offended anyone. I hear it all day long from my co-workers, friends, etc., how can I live in Detroit, (The Motor City), and refuse to drive an american made car. To me, it`s not about "money" so much as "VALUE" as I perceive it. I`m not rich, nor do I have a"trust fund", (wish I did...Porsche GT2 or Ferrari 456M for me). All I was really looking for when I came to Autopia was someone who could detail EVERY inch of my car.
Again, I sincerely apologize if I offended anyone,
Kevin

Yellow C4,
when I joked about the trust fund I wasn`t referring to to you. Where I live I just see wayyyyy too many jobless brats having their rent paid for by the parents and driving cars that I will never in my lifetime be able to afford. They may have money and a much more expensive car, but mine still looks like a million bucks thanks to Autopia!

Audioquest = Badass cable and B&W`s are okay
Living in Detroit is not the best place for us import drivers. I hear it all day long at work too. They seem to think my car made in Liberty Ohio is imported but their American cars made in Mexico or Canada are OK. Somehow the Americans employed at the Honda plants are flown in from Japan every morning and flown home after work. :lol

Hmmm...
I`ve been in a lot of Porsches, BMWs, and Audis that were built in the late 80`s and early 90`s, and they too were big `ole POS`.
Comparing your 1989 Rattletrap C4 `Vette against your newer Porsche, Audi or even VW isn`t exactly a solid footing for a well grounded comparison. My wife`s old 1997 Escort had better build quality than most cars from 1988-89, regardless of the manufacturer.
I hear these sort of comparisons all the time..."Back in 198x, when I had a _____, it was a pile of garbage! Ergo, the 2005 version must also be a pile of ______."
I get to drive late model Porsches, Bentleys, Mercedes, BMWs, Jaguars, and so on all the time...it`s part of my job...and they all have their strong and weak points. I also get to drive a 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo around DC when I`m there on business (company car), and man...it`s no picnic...but I certainly wouldn`t use that as the basis for my argument that a new whatever is better than any Porsche, simply because I drove a 1989 Porsche around before...
For every great experience you`ve had with your C4S or your Audi, there are probably a dozen people who`ve had bad experiences. The internet`s full of bulletin boards where people are complaining about problems with their cars.
While at the GM launch for the C6 `Vette, they quoted some performance figures that indicate the new, base-level C6 is FASTER than the `03 Z06, which was FASTER than the Porsche 911 around a few race tracks.... Quality issues, well...Mercedes ranked near the bottom in a recent ownership survey, and Porsche finished about mid-pack (as reported by Automotive News).
Don`t get me wrong - I`m not an American car fanatic either, but I think some of your comments might be a little off-base.

I wasn`t "bashing" another member`s car. I purchased a corvette back in `89. Had it for 2.5 months and was up at the dealership with it so much, they were talking about making me a timecard, so i speak from personal experience. As for outrunning it, you give me a half inch of snow, I`ll give the vette a head start and with th Audi, still eat it for lunch. As for the Porsche, you give me a tight road course and the results will be pretty much the same...been there, done that. I find that american made cars are all about "straight line" performance. A lot of my friends are into drag racing. I never bought into it because I feel that anyone can drive fast in a straight line. I`m invoved in and do a lot of road course racing/rallying where a cars nimbleness, or rather its ability to change direction quickly, (coupled with its ability to retain its composure while doing so), is more important than its "straight line" performance.
I think you should come and take a ride in my car as it handles the twisties quite nicely and it`s not even a Z06. I think I could hang with you in the curves, let me know if you are ever in O`town and we can find out. If you are using an 89 Vette as your basis then you are going to be surprised. By the way I`m a big German car fan and could probably have a Porsche if I wanted it but the Vette was the best bang for the buck.

This has been a long and interesting thread. I think what we`ve learned from it is simply people have different opinions, different values and love different cars.
I remember family get togethers where my Dad and Grandpa got into it because one was a `Ford man` and one was a `Chevy man`. Things got awfully hot and it spoiled more than one Sunday dinner.
I`m going to play the role of Mom and make everyone change the subject. How about we talk about detailing the cars instead.
Peace.
