Not to mention it`ll help the car NOT lean out and blow up. I`ve actually seen a clogged intake system cause detonation..

Completely agree. These things can get quite nasty trapping all sorts of nasty stuff including pollen, small droppings from trees, small bugs, grass clippings from careless gardeners with blowers, etc. .......and yes, even dust which even though you may not live in a "dust bowl" can still add up. Obviously, not all are created so some filter better than others, but IME they work. Keeps all that nasty stuff from getting blown through your evaporator, vents and into the cabin.

    K & N Cabin filters

^ you people know the dirtier a filter gets the better it works (filters)?

Can anyone point me to a single incident of a vehicle problem caused from and dirty cabin filter?

(And by "dirty", I mean normal use, not like someone drove their car through a swamp or something)

...and if you think it makes the inside of the car "stink" - I`ve replaced a lot of ENGINE air filters and have never noticed and odor from any of them.

    Re: K & N Cabin filters

^ Swanicyouth, I know for a fact that a cabin filter can hold a mildew, sour, foul smell and that was a real problem for me. The only reason I`m bothering to make this point is because this vehicle was brand new. I ordered and purchased it, it was delivered to me in the plastic. It took forever to get the vehicle in my hands. It`s a long story but I just but ended up ordering a second one. They both showed up the same week. My father bought one and I bought the other. I`m convinced the car sat at the manufacturers plant in some holding lot, windows up, in the hot sun for a couple of months waiting for a recall procedure that was determined to be be needed before mine ever left the plant. Previously delivered vehicles revealed a problem, mine was built but not shipped.

It is a vehicle that never had the new car smell though some people said that`s just the way a new car smells. I knew better. It didn`t smell exactly like a stinky A/C evaporator, more of a vinegar smell but you get the idea. I tried both Meguiar`s and Dakota`s odor bombs and virtually every over the counter and spray fragrance available to make it better. It just didn`t smell right, nothing lasted more than a day or two. I put up with the smell for months and finally replaced the cabin filter, it looked brand new, no discoloration, no dirt build up in the crevices, the vehicle has less than 3000 miles on it as I type this. Installed a new $15 filter, problem solved. Now I didn`t take a big whiff of this filter, I didn`t want to be breathing some deadly spore but it didn`t stink at arms length. No one will ever convince me that the filter wasn`t the cause of this problem, it was as apparent as night and day. I`ve changed literally thousands of air intake filters that held strong fuel smells, this is particularly the case with filters that sat on top of the carb. or throttle body. I`d be truly surprised if you can tell me you haven`t seen this in your travels.

This all said, I won`t argue the fact and believe someone could surely make the case that having the filter itself was the problem. Had it not been there, it couldn`t have retained the odor.

....pretty much sums up what any HVAC tech is going to tell you as well (home or auto). An obstructed/dirty filter puts a strain on the blower motor and makes the system less efficient overall. I would never think of letting the filters in my home get that dirty nor my vehicles. ....but that`s just me.

Can you show me one documented case of a blower motor failing from a dirty cabin filter? Just one real case, not an article of supposition or possibilities...

I`ve been working on cars for 30 years - and have yet to see a cabin air filter cause a single problem.

GearHead`s issue was on a brand new vehicle, so there was something defective with the original filter, since it was not right from new. That`s not a "dirty" or worn out filter - that`s something that wasn`t made right in the first place.

For full disclosure, I change the HVAC filter in my house every 6 mos with the OE Aprilaire filter.

No I can`t but then again I`ve never looked nor felt the need to.

...but hey, no one is telling you to heed the advice of the manufacturer, mechanics, HVAC experts, etc. If you want to rock the original cabin air filter in your rides for years on end, go nuts. Seriously, it makes no difference to me if that`s what works for you. For me, it`s something that typically costs me a few bucks each year, its not a big deal.

I originally liked your post because I thought it was sarcasm. A dirty cabin filter can reduce airflow from your vents. In the Florida heat...that`s a bad thing and a dirty smelly filter will give our interiors an unwanted source of fragrance. Both of those reasons are good enough for me to keep my filter clean.

The engine air filter would not have anything to do with odors in the car, but the cabin filter would. I think there was some confusion earlier if we were all talking about cabin filters or air filters.

Some guys have tried adding cabin filters to Ford Panther Platform cars...they think it`s a great upgrade but admit it cuts down on the HVAC flow ("no thanks!" says Accumulator).

My 2010 Challenger didn`t originally come with one (wasn`t even an option at the time). Funny thing is that it came with the removable cover on the passenger side of the windscreen cowl trim where you could insert the filter like the Chargers had. However, it didn`t have the plumbing to accept a filter. I had to buy the part made for a 2010 Charger and install it my Challenger (totally interchangeable btw) so I could use a filter.

My last two cars prior to my Challenger had cabin filters. They caught a lot of nasty stuff that would have otherwise blown in through the vents, collected on the evaporator/box, etc. I don`t know if I would install one in an application not designed for it (where performance suffers) but in this case (considering the components are the same for each platform) it works quite nicely.

Kean- Glad you were able to retrofit that so well! Interesting that they made `em that way.

Yeah, in the absence of a filter, the interior of the Crown Vic gets a *LOT* dustier than the interiors of the Audis. As a dog-hauler, it gets wiped down enough that it doesn`t really matter, but still...I`ll never get the ductwork truly clean.
