What I saw today....ugg...

I saw someone "cleaning" his nice, late 60s/early 70s, Mercedes with a bucket of water and a dirty kitchen sponge. The car was parked on the street in Brooklyn so he didn`t hose it off or anything. He was really scrubbing to get the salt off, too.

At the end he just emptied the bucket of water onto the roof and drove away...no drying. I only have 5 posts, and I know better than that!!!

Sorry to make you all cringe. Should I have intervened?

Nah....they would just look at you funny and say "Why do I need two buckets to wash my car and what the hell are microfibers and I`m perfectly happy using my old tin of Turtle Wax and yes I`m going to wipe the wax off with this old t-shirt and so what if I didn`t clean my wheelwells and....."

Well, you get the idea....

Someday you might be compounding those swirls on his car. He was probably using Dawn for the wash too. :down

Yea its kinda tough to decide on who to tell they are washing incorrectly to. A lot of people will not take it to well, but a lot will thank you.

I suggest you compliment his car and talk about it and then ask him about how he keeps up the paint and then talk to him about the correct way. Make sure to inform him of clay, polish, wax, sealants stuff like that. He then may even hire you to detail his car.

I think any advice would have been wasted on him. Anyone who seriously thinks that is a good way to clean their car is probably not all there. Plus, being a New Yorker, he might have stabbed you.

Face it, not everyone is as "educated" as you are about the "proper" technique for washing a car.

One step at a time, GSR, if the guy is using a sponge and dirty water to wash his car, he won`t get using clay, polishes, waxes, and sealents.

This doesn`t happen often, but I agree with Scott on this one.

Just because NYC filthy and dirty and filled with third world criminals does not mean he would have stabbed you for offering advice.

Thats absurd!!! He would have shot you. Nobody in NYC wastes their time with a knife anymore, it requires to much skill to learn and use. He would have shot you for sure.

Perhaps we should get coupons from local carwash operators and carry them with us to give to people like this.

Taking his car to a carwash..while abhorent to most here...would be this guy`s best bet.

i dont think he would have stabbed anyone, but i can imagine him with the hands in the air, screaming and throwing the bucket and dirty sponge at you for trying to tell him how to clean his car....

I grew up in NY, so I understand completely.

1) If he cared, he wouldn`t have been doing it in the first place.

2) It`s probably leased, anyhow; maybe a company car.

3) Guns are restricted in NYC only for those who care about the law; kind of like how drugs are most restricted in Texas.
