A question for you fine folk.

I had a customer come to me with a Red Wine bottle bust all over his car.



I searched and came up with Hair Spray. Would this do a decent job?



Please hurry any replys.

I don`t know about hair spray but I`d maybe try a regular carpet cleaner and vinegar/water rinse. The proper way to try to get this out would be with a heated extractor (professionaly) but you can try anything you want......I assume you ARE talking about the inside of the car, right?

If inside, I`d get some of the special "red stain" remover stuff (see if TOL has it) and use it with a good extractor.



I dunno about the "hair spray" idea, but I`d be pretty leery of trying something that unconventional.

I haven`t had to deal with red wine but Meguiars APC diluted always works well for me.

Red stains are tuff due to the dyes normally in them. For example, Kool Aid is not naturally RED, they use artificial dyes to create the color. Therefore when Johhny spills Kool Aid on the carpet, it becomes very difficlut to remove unless you get it before it dries. Once it dries, the dyes in the Kool Aid dye the carpet red. Regular extracting more than likely will not do the job. You need something designed for red stains.

Try Oxy clean, the powder mix. Take a 16 oz bottle and mix 1/2 scoop or 1 scoop (approx. 2 Tblsp) with the hottest water you can get out of tap (don`t boil) and pour it directly on the stain. Let sit for a few minutes, agitate, and extract with some sort of machine at your disposal ie; wet vac, extractor, LGM etc.



Reapply mixture as needed if it seems to be doing the trick-- Worth a shot, I have gotten out some pretty bad stains this way.

Yes amazingly hair spray works great for getting red wine out of carpet...dont ask how I know that...

Well, thats something I never would have thought of, Hair spray ! This forum does expose a person to some tricks.... By the way, isnt it illegal to have a bottle of wine open in the car ?... hehe, Great prevention method... just kidding...

Does it not dissolve some of the glue in the carpet?

I know hairspray works great on hard floor such as

linoleum floor. It will even take off Sharpie color marks.

Is it the alcohol in the hairspray? Would using straight alcohol work better?

*I* think it has to do with the alcohol content. I am no chemist by any means though.

I do know that I shampooed the carpets and extracted the area after the stains were removed. It takes very little to get the stain out so I dont think it hurts the glue.
