I have not seen this one first hand but heard about it on a Z06 Vette forum.

So this guy goes to look at a used electron blue 2003 Z06. For some reason its HEAVILY discounted. Looks at the paint....scratches all the way through the paint and into the fiberglass!!! Two lesbians bought the car and washed it HARD with steel wool one day. Scratches so bad the dealer couldn`t repair them and the car needed a complete re-spray...a 2003 with FIVE THOUSAND MILES!

This is a great thread! Haven`t laughed so much in ages...

Anyway, I`m a recent convert to the religion that is Autopia, and I never cared for any car before I got my `92 black miata. Anyhow, 18 months ago, my Dad gave me his `91 vauxhall cavalier, as an upgrade from my `80s ford escort, as he was splashing out on a brand new silver BMW.

Lately I`ve been talking the talk about car care, and asking what they use on their cars (BMW & red 2001 miata) - answer? ````` (dish-wash) liquid. :scared

Have they ever polished these cars? No...

I tried to tell Dad he`s not doing his Beemer any favours with the ````` and do you know what he replied? "It didn`t do the cavalier any harm" ... Suffice to say I sold it after 6 months as I was warned by my Brother In Law mechanic that it was going to need some serious welding soon due to the rust...

I recently offered to `do` the Beemer for him, and he informed me that it`s had the Amazing Glaze treatment, and will never need polishing again - this cost him Ă‚£300 It looks neither Amazing nor Glazed to me...

Moral of the story? Some people just don`t care, even when they`ve just spent Ă‚£16+ on a new car. :nixweiss

And as for trying to suggest that my Mother washes the bird boms off her miata paint before whenever the next weeked wash is due, well...

Well that is exactly what i did, went to home depo and bought the 7428 version, i have been thinking about buying one for a while so i went ahead and did it. I`m pretty excitied about using it, if any one can give some tips on what i need that would be great, i am going to do a search as well, all it came with was a backing plate.

A "neighbor" of mine came over one day and asked me about "washing and waxing" her car ( a light blue 1995 Camry) for her. The car is garaged, washed every two weeks at one of the local all cloth car washes, the interior is immaculate but she hasn`t had it waxed in the three years she has lived in the neighborhood.

I looked the car and I told her it needed to have a full exterior detail to make it look it`s best. She then asked what that entailed, so I told her my procedure.

She said "thank you, I`ll think about it"...

A week later, she was in her driveway "detailing" her car. I watched her as she washed the car using Dove shampoo and an old sponge, then taking the bucket of soapy water andd throwing it over the car, grit and all befoire rinsing. She then used an old towel to dry the car, dropping it a few times in the driveway. She then tried to "clay" the car with play doh. After giving up on claying, she then went right to "waxing" with mop `n glo floor cleaner!

When she was done with her "detail project", she came over and asked me why her car didn`t shine like my vehicles.... :doh!

My dad works is a manager of the reconditioning/detailing section of a dealership. Ive worked with him there before and still I occasionally go work a day or two when Im not in school if he is backed up. Before, I thought nothing about it, but after reading these boards and this site lately, I am horrored by some things that go on there. All of the vehicles, including Corvettes, are washed using a brush. I guess I can understand that for time reasons. The same bucket of water is used for several cars without changing, and they use Ajax liquid dish soap instead of car soap. I can also remember a couple years ago, one worker would wash a vehicle with water that had been sitting overnight without doing ANYTHING to it other than stirring it up with the brush. I used to wash my vehicles with dish soap because dad would say "Its just as good as long as you only use a little bit", but now I refuse to wash my car with anything other than car soap unless I will be waxing it immediately after.

Also, once our church had a fund raiser car wash and neither me nor my dad could make that one. Our church almost got sued when some of the ladies decided to clean a guy`s either chrome or aluminum truck wheels with a SOS pad......

I think we should start an Autopia fund to help Somedevil come up with the $15,000 to rent that Ferrari for the week

    Come on...it`d be worth it!

Neighbor: How you like my new Ferrari, its the best one they make, cost me $350,000. I`m going to wash it with this toilet brush now because I`m the coolest guy in town!

    Somdevil: Wow...thats nice

Neighbor: Hey, where`s that Ferrari you bought last week?

Somedevil: Oh that? That was just a rental. I wouldn`t be dumb enough to buy something like that.

Then laugh when they come to reposess it lol. Guys like that seldom have the resources to back up their "lifestyle"

    Too funny lol

A post above mentions a church car wash; I have a "church car wash" story of my own. Several years ago, at the request of a friend, I took my wife`s NEW car to a local church car wash fundraiser. While they, um, "washed" the car (you really have to stretch the meaning of "wash"), I chatted with my friend. After a couple of minutes I look over at the car and see a guy using a stiff-wire brush to "clean" the (painted) front bumper! The brush he was using was the type used to remove peeling house paint! My bumper was ruined, scratched to the primer. I was mad, but being young and stupid I just left like nothing happened.

That was 1992 - no one but ME has ever cleaned my cars since!

    thats hillarious

my church (The confirmation class i was in) had a fundraiser carwash.....one of the people asked if i would do it since they knew i was big into the cars and stuff, and i said sorry but i couldnt......Anyway, a few minutes later they were asking people to bring old sponges and rags......

In a way i felt bad not helping out cause i dont wanna be a ***** or whatever, but at the same time i`d probably wanna kill myself after seeing what went on...haha

Same with the schools around here.....

My neighbor`s son (13-ish) was doing his weekly carwash chore yesterday on his dad`s dark green Mustang. He was diligently scrubbing/washing with the foam side of a window squeegee. Drying, of course, with the blade side.

Meanwhile, my 3 yr old daughter and I were washing the G in our driveway. We went through a ton of towels and MF`s, since she has butterfingers and drops them -- but she knows not to use them if they`ve touched the ground, and I think I spent more time fetching "clean one, please, Daddy" than actually washing the car

"Scratch and swirl free at 3" LOL.
