Finally got my PC 7424 in today. Won`t have a chance to use it till this weekend, but I decided to start it up to see what it felt like with the cutting pad on it that I ordered along with it. I noticed that the PC was a bit noisy, sort of a vibrating clicking sound, is this normal?

Yup. That`s how they sound. That`s how all 3 of the PCs I`ve used have sounded. I thought there was something wrong at first, but that`s just the noise of a machine at work. No worries.

Sounds about as loud as a hedge trimmer, if you have one of those.

Does that model have the 6 inch counterweight? I noticed mine got a lot smoother and quieter when I upgraded to the 6 inch weight.

I do find I can focus better when I use the foam ear plugs when running the PC.

Porter Cable ships model number 7424 with a 5 inch counterweight which is not what most people use if you are using the velcro 6 inch backer plates and 6 or 7.5 inch pads. I think the best model to purchase myself is the one I bought, I purchased model number 7336 at Lowes for 109.00 and it already comes with the 6 inch counterweight which is what I needed anyway as I am using these backer plates and 7.5 pads:

This explains the PC models and counterweights:

The coastal tool package includes the 6" counterweight. Very easy to change. Package also includes 6"velcro backplate all for ~$125 INCLUDING shipping cost.

Check the Porter Cable web site and find a service center near you. You can get a 6" weight from them. Changing it is easy. I dont think your gonna hurt much useing it for a weekend with the 5" weight.
