Black plastic panel over 911 engine bay

On the auto pop up spoiler, there is a black grating or vent that appears to be abs or some other sturdy but plasticy thinger. It is textured, not silky, and I don`t want something coming off and dripping down my paint or into the engine bay (the vent is directly over the engine).

I searched the archives, but didn`t seem to find much. What is a good product to restore the "blackness" of the vent?

JPS911- The concern you have is why I`ve pretty much given up on ERV dressings for black trim. I`d clean it with AIO and then apply BFII or SG. I`ve had great luck with this regimen on my textured (and also my smooth) black trim. The BFII seems a little easier to get uniform than the SG, especially on not-so-new surfaces, but I don`t think the SG will look bad. No, I haven`t had any trouble with wax-like staining. A brush (even a toothbrush) and using a little Meg`s FI can be helpful, too.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So - get it clean, protect it from UV with something like 303, and then, when you polish or wax, mask it! It won`t take you more than a minute - buy a roll of pre-taped masking paper at an industrial paint supply place and you can do it in less than 30 seconds. Remember, masking for detailing is not masking for painting -- it does not have to be PERFECT. I found it goes really fast.

JPS911- Hope you found the BlackfireII and (Klasse) Sealant Glaze on the acronym list OK. These products don`t stain black plastic and provide good protection. As carguy said, masking it off when using products that DO stain is a time saver in the long run. Whether to use some External Vinyl/Rubber (ERV) dressing like 303 or a sealant like BFII or SG is a matter of personal preference.

I have great success using Meguiar`s Gold Class Trim Detailer on vinyl, plastic and rubber. It is dry-to-the-touch (after a few minutes) and leaves a nice satin finish. No greasy residue. Much like 303 except in gel form.

But it`s not permanent. After couple of washings it will need replacing.

Good and very inexpensive.

I found out about this product in "Excellence" (THE BEST Porsche Magazine) when I had my 911SC.

I am still using Vinylex. It stays on exterior trim for a long time.
