Question about buffers/polishers

Are those cheep buffers/polishers (2,400 rmp) at Pep-Boys, WalMart, etc... (6-7" for $29.00 - 49.99) any good?

I know PC is the ultimate thing right now, but for occasional detailer, are those cheep ones any good?

If you are asking ifthey will remove swirls and surface problems the answer is no. The motor in those machines simply does not have enough power or torque for that type of work.

They are on the other hand O.K. for removing waxes and things like that. They are mostly a time and arm saver, they will not correct any surface problems.

I just got a PC and when i went into the local ames to look if they had TW tire gel I saw one of those buffers. I noticed the amperage on it said .65 and I also noticed it was made of really cheap plastic.

Me thinks that:

1: .65 amps is about 1/6 of the power of a PC (3.7 amps) wen you try to apply any pressure to it the pad will slow down and not create any heat.

2: If you were ever to drop it or hit it off anything I bet it would break easily.

3: 99% of these are NOT Random orbital polishers, so if you were to try a harsh abrasive and held it in one spot too long(ok WAYY too long) good bye clearcoat.

Simply put you get what you pay for. Not necessary true in all cases, but for the most part. Save your money> Even being an occasional detailer the need for a major overhaul will almost present itself. A that time you`ll have that PC to take care of it.
