It`s generally accepted that it`s bad to use products containing silicone when waxing and detailing a car. I know, when painting, that silicone can cause "fisheyes" in the new paint. But can someone explain to me why silicone is bad for the enthusiast/detailer to use?

There are many types of silicone the consensus is the oily ones are bad. They attract dust and do not last long IMO.

PDMS based protectants (water based) have a silicone in them but it is the good silicone not the evil one.

Silicone products may seem to work just fine, however... Over time, silicone will work it`s way down through the layers of paint onto the metal itself. If this happens... The only remedy for this is to have your vehicle repainted. There may be some instances where this may not occur, but for the most part... It will! Just ask a painter if he likes working with silicone based products! It is more time consuming for a painter to remove it and ultimately... More money out of your pocket if you need a new paint job. So whether you are a novice or a professional, products that are silicone based... Should be avoided!!!:xyxthumbs

Silicone oils will leech into micro cracks and voids in the paint. If it is not removed completely will cause "fish eyes" in a repaint. It might be true that 80% of the time, nothing bad occurs, but why take the chance.....thats the way I look at it.
