    Hi,

I am new here and I don`t have any experience in detailing. I want to buy a new car next week and it will be black. They asked me at the dealer if I wanted a complete protection program for the paint and for against the corrosion and acid rain. I really dont have any idea, the car will be barked outside ( I am in Chicago) and it will be used as a daily driver car. I am afraid that the salt in the road will make a problem so I am thinking about buying this package. It will be around $750. Should I do it or not? Is there any good detailing shop in Chicago?

Don`t do it, it`s usually just a sealant type of product which can be purchased anywhere. Buy a good inexpensive sealant and maintain the car yourself by waxing every 2-3 months. Most important thing to do in your climate is to wash the vehicle often. Rinseless washes for your harsh winters would be a good idea.

Why in the world would you buy a brand new black vehicle to use as a daily driver in Chicago? That`s like getting a root canal without a numbing shot just for the heck of it....

Either way, don`t pay the dealer for that crap. If you want a good shop down there I hear good things about Ivan @ LUSTR Auto Detail.

Find a good detailer who can apply OptiCoat for you. You can do a search here for more info, but basically it is a permanent sealant/protectant that is harder than the clearcoat on your car. You can apply it yourself, but it requires some experience.

AngelLight- Welcome to Autopia! As noted, keeping an outside-only daily driver nice is tough, let alone when it`s black!

The advice to find a good pro to help with this is 100% correct, it`ll be money well-spent and *MUCH* better than going with the dealership`s protection package. Dealerships almost always (and most people here would leave out that "almost") do more damage than good when even just washing, and that package is all about making them money, not helping your car look good or be protected.

Please at least give Ivan a call before you do anything else, and you might mention that he was recommended to you by members of Autopia.org.

Heh heh, no way to talk you into a white/silver/light blue/charcoal/anything-but-black car is there? It`d sure be a lot easier to keep a color like that looking good.
