Well, one thing I immediately noticed was this claim the author makes....

Objective: To build a 3 stage DI water purification system for S$100 (similar units retail for $300 upwards.

Being the owner of one of those "similar units" (a CRS DIC-20), I don`t see how his set-up is a good comparison. A better match IMO would be something like Griots in-line DI cartridge. One big difference that is obvious if you compare the two is that the DIC-20 has two 20" resin cartridges the water is filtered through. With such a small unit, my worry would be getting enough output while still allowing the resin to effectively filter the water. Replacement would also be more frequent if you want to keep the TDS levels down (mine stay at "0" throughout most of the useable life of the resin).

Don’t get me wrong…. I think something like this would certainly help in some situations. In the author’s scenario, his water is already a relatively low 67 ppm. By comparison (the last time I measured), mine was upward of 500+. That goes down by ~100 ppm after my sediment and soft water filters and down to nil when I hook up the DI system.

If I were to build my own, I would try to source larger housings and cartridges I could refill. I have seen a couple of places where you can buy all of the components for 10-20” ones. Whether or not it would be cheaper than simply buying a pre-built equivalent, I don’t know.

….btw, if you’re looking for replacement resin, check out Windows101. They have cubic foot bags for $115. If my math is right, that’s ~ 28 liters. The author’s source is $12.85/liter while the cu/ft bag would be about $5 - $6 / liter if you factor in shipping.

Look here Garden Hose Filters – Pure Water Products, LLC I bought a hose filtering system like this http://www.purewaterproducts.com/img/gh104_1200.jpg with the FC024 cartridges... the whole set up was 80.00 and free shipping. It`s not deinonized... but ANYTHING is better than the water in this town... it leaves water spots like you would not believe... I mean HORRIBLE!
