Like the title states...I inherited a black and decker 6138 industrial automotive series rotary polisher. The minimum RPM on the dial is 1500rpm. Despite 1500 being the min...the trigger control can be operated like a throttle, with a good deal of precise control to achieve speeds under 1500 rpm.

This will be my first time using a rotary, so I want to make sure this machine is suitable.

Also, I am having an issue installing the pads. I have an old rubber backing plate with one of those screw down things...but whenever i install a pad, I feel that the center screw isn`t down far enough and would likely make contact with my paint if i applied any pressure to the machine, so I think I`m doing something wrong.

    Thanks for any help!

Hey Jason. Yes you can use it. It will be fine. What I do for the pad issue is take the backing plate, lay it flat, then put your pad on top of it, then take the nut and line it up with the nut in the backing plate. Make sure the nut does not spin around. It should all fit nice and snug. Then put it on the buffer, keeping everything together, and tighten everything as one piece. There should be a button on the back side of the head. Push that in as you tighten the pad. That button is the lock for the shaft that the pad goes on. Get lots of practice on some old parts before you try it on your car. Good luck Joe
