Brown Tires?

Any ideas why a newer set if Michelins, shortly after being cared for start turning brown. I always scrub with a brush followed by a cloth with soap and water?

Usually has something to do with a UV barrier I believe. Its been discussed on here before, I had a similar problem. I just use Megs APC to clean them and that usually doesn`t show the brown so much....I`m sure someone with better knowledge will chime in or just do a search.

Are you using a protectant after you clean them?

i wondered that as well. LoL. APC works pretty good though, just remember to use some form of dressing on them to keep them from drying out or fading . . . . much like wax to a car paint, tires need to be dressed.

dressed with water based dressing, there is some talk that the solvent based dressings leach out the uv protectants

it also depends on tire type/brand. My old tires would look awful in no time without dressing. My new Continental tires look OK without anything on them.

What dressings/protecterants are water based? Is Armor All water based? I don`t want to leech anything out of my tires.

Water based is milky looking, solvent clear or tinted clear.



The reason I asked about protectant is because I see a lot of brown tires coming from auctions and other detailers that use solvent dressings. Not sure if they clean them before applying the solvent, but it is a real pain to return them to black.

Process in which tires get pale and brownish looking is called "Browning" in which the conditioners/treatments like Antiozonants flow to the surface from heat & wear. What occurs often with solvent dressings are the petroleum distallates accelerates the process and makes Browning appear rapidly.



First strip the tire down to a good base with any good APC/Degreaser. Then switch to a water based dressing that absorbs into the tire and isn`t harmful will be a better choice. Any good dressing like OptiGel, Z16, Duragloss 253, Showroom FX White Pearl, etc will work.

A couple products that I like are Poorboy`s Bold N Bright and Chemical Guys Natural Shine. Both are very simular, no silicones or solvants, leaves the rubber looking new, not too shiny and leaves no lines from the applicator. Both products are water based.

Switch to Stoner for tires....spray then wipe with a paper towel or it will spatter to the paint. If tires are brown this is an indication of too much dressing. Stoner WONT add to your troubles.

Basically tires hate dressing. I dont use much dressing on high end cars. I clean the tire and condition it so it takes on a dark appearance. I always rewipe to avoid spatter to the finish.

One thing that you will love for cleaning tires is Westley`s Bleche-Wite. Available from your local auto supply store in a white spray bottle. Amazing.

I have found the same problem with my wheel cleaner. (local distributer`s)



I quickly changed to detail kings whitewall cleaner w/blackening agent.



I love it and have not had one tire browning problem yet
