If you have a Big Lots store by you I`d check it out. I bought a halogen worklight form them over the weekend for $30.00. Its two 500 watt halogens on a tripod, it is actiallu pretty stable. Its not the best but for teh price it works for me.
Here`s another thread with info on a $20 light from Home Depot:

Sears, Kmart, Home Depot, Lowes and many other stores carry those lights. I personally opted for the Craftsman lights from Sears but they all work.
Walmart has a small single light without a pole for $10
I wouldn`t hesitate to buy cheap halogens, as my cheap one seems to show marring better, and go through bulbs less frequently, than my fancy Sears one. But I suppose all cheap lights aren`t created equal and I can imagine some of `em are real junk.
For final inspection, I still like incandescent trouble lights, used in an otherwise dark shop. About ~$25 at Lowe`s.
I just bought these off Ebay for $15 plus $15 bucks shipping.
It`s a dual 500 watt tripod with hi-low power switches (250w and 500w) supposedly bought at Home Depot for a job that fell through. He said he had more than 10 units.
Portable 500 Watt Halogen Work Light With Stand - eBay (item 230385823022 end time Oct-14-09 17:13:29 PDT)
I should be receiving it later this week.
The Home Depot website only shows single lights and they`re $30 each!
Oops, it ended today. He may relist if he didn`t sell them all.
