Opinions needed on rust

Hey guys,

I have a problem with rust by the rear quarter panel. The rust is starting to spread now. What are some ways that can temporarily stop this? I have some Permatex rust dissolver gel and some rust converter. Are these products any good or is it just going to be a waste of time and effort ?

I haven`t done it before, but check out POR15, Inc. - Stop Rust Permanently - Repair Gas & Fuel Tanks for options. I think you`d have to knock the paint off and sdand back the rust, treat/prime/whatever, then repaint. Probably a lot of trouble if you just want a temporary fix.

There is no easy fix and no temp. way to get rid of it. It doesn`t look like its through, but if it is it then the only way to truly get rid of it is to cut the metal out and weld in patches. If its not through, then you need to sand blast the area FULLY, then grind it up and wipe it with mud.

Don`t use POR15 on the exterior either! I hate it even for frames.

Why? I haven`t used it, but I`ve known people who swear by it.

For the exterior or frame? There is NO need for it on the exterior.

I hate POR15, lol. It marketed as some sort of miracle product, people just say use POR15 b/c its marketed so good and ****. There is far better products out there. It very picky about what substrate it will adhere to and will flake off even when prep is correctly done.

I *GREATLY* prefer Eastwood`s Rust Encapsulator over POR15. Less finicky about prep, better adhesion. POR15 can work great but only when everything is just right (which is tricky when it comes to this kind of thing).

arfax- I can`t tell if that rust is coming through from the back side or not, but I suspect that it might be. Even if it isn`t, a pretty large area is involved.

I suspect that any quick-and-dirty fix will actually (IMO) make things look worse than they do now. Right now the average person still sees normal paint but any fix will look like an in-progress repair.

Eh...I`d get it fixed properly or replace the vehicle.

Arfax -

There is no - I repeat - NO temporary fix for rust. The rust has to be eliminated, and the area filled(either with a filler or new metal). Then repainted.

Call you local dealership and ask them if you could get the guy that sprays bumpers. Chances are he will charge you roughly $200-$300 to repair.

That`s what I would charge, however, I am in Pennsylvania.
