The common conception is that clay will remove wax and anything that suggests otherwise is basically buyer beware.
That being said, on one occasion with admittedly unscientific methods and measurements, clay did not. It was tested on a black (jet black IIRC) BMW e90 sedan (2006+ 3-Series). After polishing the hood to absolute perfection, another famous detailer and myself applied several waxes to sections of the hood and measured its beading. After this, the bottom halves of the marked off areas were clayed with a 2 oz piece of Riccardo clay and Optimum No Rinse as clay lubricant. There was no apparent difference in the beading between the clayed and un-clayed areas. The areas were dawn washed to completely remove the wax from the areas to be certain that the paint itself was not causing the beading. Indeed, it was not. There was no-minimal beading present after this.
YMMV so take it for what it`s worth but on that day, but under those exact circumstances clay did not remove wax. Even a slight change could completely alter the results so it is hard to say that it applies in this case, but the final decision is in your hands.
