:wavey Hey everyone, I`m new here, so your patience is greatly appreciated. About 6 months ago I purchased a 92 Saab 900 SE Convertible, that is black. The previous owner had it painted about 5-6 years ago, but it has swirl marks in it and some oxidation. I have tried several hand cleaners, polishes, but now I see where there is very slight orange peel evident in the paint. I do have a orbital sander, but only goes to about 1,500 rpms and is 6 inch, I believe. I was considering using 2,000 grit on the orange peel to even it out, followed by successive levels of finer compounds to remove this. I am an abslute amateur at this, but I really would like a very nice finish on the car. I see where the paint job cost $7,500 when it was done, so the car does look pretty good, but I want it to look GREAT! Suggestions? Comments?

    Thanks in advance,

    Gary

Is this clear coated or single stage? If you`ve never polished paint with a rotary before, I`d suggest using a PC instead (much safer) unless you feel very brave and willing to risk paint burn. Then again, you said "orbiter" (the reference to "RPM" threw me off if that`s the case).

From what I`ve read, taking down orange peel may or may not be a good idea depending on how much clear exists. Check the search function here for a mass of opinions. If you`re really an absolute amateur and never polished paint before, read up on the how-to guides on Autopia so you understand what`s involved.

You are right, I meant rotary sander. And the paint is "PPG" brand is is a base coat/clear coat paint. Does that help with any assessments? Thanks again.
