how aggressive is this? I`m thinking of trying to reduce some etching and got some 3m 2000 grit finishing paper. How risky is this?

It`s pretty aggressive... not necessarily risky, my car has a number of 2000 sand spots that are 3 years old or so and showing no sign of failure.
Once you buff black, you never go back
Just use caution as you would when wetsanding and you should have no troubles. I used 2000 today to knock down some paint touch-up.

I *really* dislike the 3M 2000 grit. It seems to leave too many "worse than 2000 grit" scratches, like the abrasives aren`t uniform. The Meguiar`s stuff worked *infinitely* better, easier to buff out afterwards. But OTOH I used the 3M until I got the Meg`s so yeah, you can use it. Just quit a little sooner than you might be tempted to
Some advice I once got that I found helpful: just use it until you`ve knocked out the gloss; that`ll help you err on the side of caution and will happen pretty fast with the 2K. You can always take off more clear later.
I would be careful though...I decided to *not* wetsand the etching on my wife`s A8...decided I`d rather have thick but imperfect clear on the roof of a daily driver that spends time down south in the sun.
