It`s going to depend on the type of material. Is it porous or not?
A well-prepared surface will make any wax look good.

Ive yet to find a good way to clean mine. I may try taking it out someday and cleaning it. Its just hard to clean it while its on the hood.
I had a thread about this same subject just last month.

I did a search and it didn`t pop up,
I`m glad to see I`m not the only one bumfuzzled on this subject
I only use a damp cloth and try to rub any dust that might be on it.
Most important of all DO NOT DRESS this material. It is fire retardant and a good safe guard for a minor underhood fire when driving.
If it is extremely soiled just purchase a new one. They are not very expensive.
