considering PC for first time

I am considering purchasing a PC to use on my 01 GMC(pewter metallic). I have light to moderate swirl marks. I have never operated a PC, is this something I can jump on and have positive results first time, or do I risk seriously damage my finish?

so far, by doing some researchI have put together this:

1st-Wash, of course

2nd-Mothers Clay

3rd-Sonus SFX-1

4th-Sonus SFX-3

5th-Klasse AIO

6th-P21S Carnauba Wax

--does this look good? I am looking for a sharp, durable finish!

If I do go with a PC, I have a few questions:

1. What brand/model, where to buy?

2. what kind of pads should I be using?

3. what polishes, etc should I be using?

Yes you can jump right in and use it the first time without being afraid, however this is with being informed. It looks like you did some good research and you should have nothing to fear.

I cannot comment on your product list, I have only used the Klasse AIO in your list...I use a different line of polishes.

1. What brand/model, where to buy?

There is only one kind of PC its either the 7424 I believe or 7436 (totally off the top of my head) You can get this at Lowes or somewhere like autogeek.net and buy a package with pads

2. what kind of pads should I be using?

I use LC and Meguiars, however I have heard great things about P2 from exceldetail.com and plan on getting those!

You will need these pads:

Light cut

Polish

Finishing

(cutting pad is optional if you think you might need a little more bite or your swirls are heavy)

3. what polishes, etc should I be using?

I have never used the Sonus line of polishes so I cant comment on those, they may be great..I just dont have experience with them.

I use Optimum and Menzerna..I like to use Optimum Compound/Optimum Polish mix for heavier swirls then you can either finish down to a perfect surface with Optimum polish or Menzerna Final Polish II. I like Optimum because they work for a very long time without drying up and dusting.

Tips I would like to pass onto you...When using the PC dont be afraid to put a little pressure on the machine when trying to remove heavy swirls. Also, move slowly at 1/2 inch per second from side to side, then up and down...and even figure eights if you want. To knock down swirls sometimes you have to attack the, from all angles. (from my experience at least) Good luck!

You might not get it right away but take time getting used to the machine. It`s very user friendly and almost impossible to burn the paint. Your SFX polishes look good as well as the rest of your process. I got my PC with backing plate at Coastaltools for a very good price. I also just purchased a Hitachi rotary that should be here tomorrow...Anyways, good luck and have fun.
